I just stopped by my local Office Max tonight, and was told by one of the managers that this location (Monroe, LA) would be closed and that as of tomorrow they "were working for the liquidators". This is inside info as the press release won't be out about these closings until Monday. After talking to another manager at another location in Louisiana, I was told that Lafayette, LA, Alexandria, LA, and one of the locations in Baton Rouge and New Orleans were also on the list. Things aren't looking to good for them right now are they? Just thought that I'd let everyone in on the secret.

I can confirm that.

When I was at the Rancho Cordova, CA store they let it slip that they were being closed up. Some people getting transferred and some getting let go. The nice guy at the counter told me, don't look for any big savings for a couple weeks, and that the employees were going to loot the good deals first ;)

I was a little pissed, but at the same time- best of luck to em. Losing your job ain't that easy, but at least they will be able to cash in on some good deals. Maybe if someone here works in one of the stores the liquidaters are taking over, they might be able to clue us in on the deals as/before they happen?

Both Staples and Office Depot continue to build new stores in profitable areas, and close ones where they lose money - just good business practice. I wouldn't worry about either going belly up any time soon.

The bad news for us if is weak players like Office Max and dot coms end up folding, the lack of competition will drive prices up and cut down on PM opportunities:(

The one in Anaheim, CA is closing too. I just happen to work there. No big deal, I just go across the street and get a job there. Liquidation starts Sunday. It is not true that the associates will get all the sales b/c they transfered all the goodies out. The ones remain are close to worthless and display only. I spent the whole day down stocking today for inventory for liquidation. They don't have good perchasing people who work for them and they suck at customer service since I cannot be everyone but I have tried to bring good customer service but not everyone will cooporate.
They are not among the good deals here anyway.

the "weak Players" like office max? OM prolly doesn't have the kind of mkt share that staples has, but they are certainly not too far behind OD. Do you even know what Officemax or have even seen one?

OfficeMax sucks anyway. It is sad that people working there are going to be out of job and stuff but that place just sucks. I stop by there everynow and then. Last time I was there they had this junk PCI 4mb video card for $59.99. This is just one of many examples that would justify them going out of business. Not to mention very limited selection.

I agree that Office Max was never a place for the real bargains, but I did have some helpful contacts there. After all, there were a pile of folks on this forum that got Linksys network kits and flat screen monitors and such, but over all they had crap selection at crap prices. I'm just glad I was able to score the deals I did.

I'll post the press release when I get it Monday.

Fry's has very slow service. People always complain, but they still shop there because their price is usually pretty low. But beware, a huge chunk of their inventory that they sell as new items, clearly has been used and returned. You can tell by the cruppled up boxes and wrinkled documentations.

i don't think fry's is a nation wide chain either...if you ask me they do so poorly because they'll hire just about anyone... which explains the poor service... i think they're only a west coast chain...
