I keep hearing about the other newsgroups like Usenet, Astraweb... etc..

What are my newsgroups considered? I have Time Warner Cable. I use them, but I dunno what they are called. It is just news-server.columbus.rr.com.
Could I subscribe to another one and use both?
Would they contain the same stuff?
Why do people subscribe to others, is that for people whose ISPs don't have newsgroups?
Where do newsgroups originate from?
Are all the files that I see on my newsgroups uploaded from people locally (Columbus area)?

Thanks for any answers!

just newsgroups, news group servers propogate kind of like how a DNS server does

Yes, yours are local to your network and is available to you as a rr subscriber, if you subscribe to another, youd probably pay for it and have a username/password to login

Mostly yes, but retetion changes between serversm certian servers will keep 30 days, some will keep 7, it all depends.

Because RR is nice enough to provide great news servers, most ISP's do not so people have to pay for them in order to get good service
Where do newsgroups originate from?
Kind of like DNS, they propogate from one server to the next

no, posted from anyone anywhere

*phew* hope that helps :)

First rule of Usenet is -- don't talk about Usenet.

I think WannaFly covered it all though. What's your retention with RR/Time Warner BTW?

Thanks a TON WannaFly!

As for TWs retention period... I think it's like 3 days or something... I don't really know. All I know is, if I see something interesting (cough new game cough), I gotta DL it then or I prolly won't get it.
