Well said and very true. Most people hate their jobs, so for 7k more, it doesn't really matter.

Maybe that's because most people chose "more money" over "happy"??

Ok, I'm a computer programmer. Do you know ANY computer programmers that are happy at work? I don't.

An illustrative story:

When I was 22 I found out my girlfriend was pregnant. I immediately went out and applied for every job up and down the street.

I started at the bakery at 2:30A til 9A
Went to the book store from 11a til 6 or 8
On certain nights I would stock from 7-11

That first year I made a little over 18,000 :)

That was 6 years ago. I currently make over about 70,000

My rationale is as follows:

I do not define myself by my job. I DO define myself as a good parent and husband. I'll take the crappy job for more money, my personal scope is not so narrow as to think my time will NEVER be my own.

I provide for my family to the best of my ability, if I have to "suffer" a little to do so, so be it.

Great attitude, djheater. :) If only more people felt that way about providing for their family.

If the more-money job was over twice as much...i'd have trouble deciding.

If they are not a huge difference in pay though, definitely the job you enjoy.

as long as the lesser paying job still provides enough money for you to live comfortably, I'd go with the more enjoyable one.

The best jobs I've had were the ones I loved to go to work. Money wasn't that big of a deal.

Money. Life's only true treasure. Aside from my health, I chose MONEY and lots of it over friends and "professional happiness."

Most people that wuss out over "OH, but I'm so happy with my job!!!" make $6.50/hour at Walmart. I'm a middle-income, blue-collar kind of guy. I make a decent living; but I choose MONEY any day.

that is what programming is about. i just graduated w/a comp sci degree and don't have a fulltime programming job yet, but I do remember doing all that work in college. the programs suck when you are stuck, looking up the solution to the problem. but once you get that solution, the feeling is one of the best feelings you could imagine (programmers know what I mean). I personally like programming, and part of it is because of the challenge and being stuck, and figuring out that one line of code I needed to make it work right, then seeing the finished result working %100.

Hard to say, it depends what my situation was. If I NEEDED the money, I'd go with the job that paid more. That way you could always keep looking while keeping your head above water. If I was set up enough not to have too many financial worries, I'd go for the fun job and give it my all.

From the number you gave, go with the lower pay, no question. The margin isn't enough to worry me, and I think it's in a slightly lower tax bracket. Of course I could be wrong about that. The sanity and calm that it would grant you would be well worth the $7K a year. And who knows, you could get a raise and fix that.

I am not sure what your point is. Which answer did you choose? Money I suspect?

I am happy for the most part, ofcourse there are ups and downs

I learn a LOT everyday which I love, sometimes I am really exhausted coz of the work presssure but its fine, learning new things and responsibility really drive me, so far I am lucky to have both of these

I think my main point is that I wouldn't work if I didn't have to. I don't understand people that would choose to work even if they were wealthy and had no need to work. I'd rather spend my time having fun, helping people, and doing my own projects. Work is work. Because I'd rather not be working but I need to for the money, I'm going to choose the job for more money.

Ok, I'm not going to lie to you, I didnt even bother to read the OP.

Take a job you enjoy over one that pays you more money. If you dont, you'll be like my father who tells his son to take the job over the money.

If you dont believe me, then find out for yourself. :) (no flames intended).

I think if you really take a lot of time to figure out what you like, you'll be able to find a job that you'd actually enjoy going to, day in and day out, for 40+ hours a week. Hopefully it's a job that pays well for your sake, then you get the best of both worlds. I plan to be a psychologist or some sort of counselor eventually. I love talking to people, hearing about their problems, giving them constructive and positive reinforcement on bettering themselves. That would be a personal challenge, and reward just about everyday. Knowing I was helping someone out, and getting paid on top of that. As long as my bills got paid, and I had a little bit of extra spending money, I could be happy doing the above.

I guess Brad isn't on tonight. It's kinda of an inside joke. I have a boring ass job that I don't really like, but I can't justify giving it up financially to do something I would enjoy more. So I told him I'll move to the middle east, do my same job there, but it would be an adventure, doing it in another culture, another place, a little danger. Plus I'd get paid more.

depends... like most things in life...

there was a time when i took a job that came with almost 50% more cash, but close to ZERO quality of life (and I mean not just bad, but ZERO...). today, i'd take quality of life over money (unless it was like double or more...)

I was hesitant to give numbers becaues I didn't really want people to think of a specific number when answering. I was just wondering how much emphasis people put on each. Is it all about the money? Or is the money secondary to being happy?

If it was a great deal more money, then I would probably go for the higher paying job, but if it wasn't too much more money, I'd take the job that was more enjoyable.
