More Marines Will (GASP!) Tip Guam Over!

There must be something in the water in Georgia's Fourth Congressional District.

Or they are playing one hell of a continuing April Fool's joke on the country each time they go to the ballot box.

First, they foisted the certifiable, thankfully ex-Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney (Democrat) on the country.

Then they replace her with carpetbagger Rep. Hank Johnson (also Democrat.)

Who also has significant cognitive issues.

And worries that an admittedly bulked up contingent of the U.S. Marines will tip the island of Guam over by their sheer weight.

Admiral Robert Willard somehow manages to keep a straight face in responding.

I didn't.

Democrat Rep. Hank Johnson worries loading too many people onto Guam could capsize the island

Los Angeles Times

April 1, 2010

First, before you watch this short but remarkable video, a little background on Democratic Rep. Hank Johnson. He's from Georgia's Fourth District. A Washington, D.C. native, he's the fellow who took office in 2007 after knocking off former five-term Democratic Rep. Cynthia McKinney.

A former county judge, the 55-year-old is an attorney, a standard liberal Democrat, receiving 100 ratings from the ADA and ACLU.

In this House Armed Services Committee hearing last Friday (no, it wasn't April Fool's Day), Johnson was questioning Admiral Robert Willard, head of the U.S. Pacific fleet, about the stationing of 5,000 additional U.S. Marines and their families on the western Pacific island of Guam, a 212-square-mile American territory that is 30 miles long and from four to 12 miles wide.

President Obama will visit there this summer.

Of course, since Johnson is one of 535 members of the United States Congress, everything he says is important.

But pay particular attention to the congressman's comments starting at the 1:16 mark and the pregnant pause after his stated concern and hand gestures.

Followed by the admiral's admirably measured military response.

Also, remember you are paying Congressman Johnson's salary this year -- $174,000.

Not necessarily, as long as the marines are evenly distributed geographically over the island I don't think tipping the island would be a problem. I think Johnson was worried that they would allow all the marines on-shore at the same time at the same place.

As I said in the thread where this first appeared, my guess is that he was just testing to see if the general would explode and scream, "You fucking stupid Negro!"

But then, I have been forced to think flexibly because otherwise I would be unable to credit how somebody with the intelligence of PJABBER could create so many idiot threads. Surely it's to separate the idiots from folk with a sense of humor.

Whats Bachman's excuse?

Bachmann told the Christian Examiner site: "I think it is jaw dropping when you think that under his watch, the federal government has taken ownership or control of the private economy. People know that something has really changed. The federal government now owns or controls 30 percent of the private economy. Just over a year ago, you couldn't say that. Just over a year ago, 100 percent of the private economy was private. Today, 30 percent is owned or controlled by government."

Yeah, imagine if an entire contingent of re-deploying Okinawa Marines all got leave at the same time at say, Dededo. That conceivably could tip the island over into the Marianas Trench, never to be seen again.

Or, maybe, Guam is really like an iceberg. It would just roll over and we would have a whole new eco-friendly island without any of those pesky Marines at all.

Of course, I think most Marines can swim, and roll the island back the way it was, so that is a very unlikely scenario all in all.

That has always been the dividing line.

Those who have a sense of humor and those who don't.

Those who see the idiocy can have a laugh. Those who don't, well, they can still run for Congress.

Idiot threads, or threads about idiots, serve to rebalance karma.

I'm just doing my part.

Is this April Fool's or just the upside of bipolarism??

I think of it as a further manifestation of One Party Government where just having a (D) next to your name guarantees you the only $174K job where you will be taken seriously no matter what kind of fantasy world you may currently occupy.

This guy has 100% ADA and ACLU ratings - think about that for a moment.

/sigh

The Lithonia Democrat's already-thin frame has shed 30 pounds in the past year. His speech is slower than ever, and he regularly gets lost in thought in the middle of a discussion. He is easily fatigued and often impatient and irritable.

Monday, he revealed why.

In an exclusive interview with the AJC, Johnson disclosed he has been battling hepatitis C, an incurable, blood-borne liver disease, for more than a decade.

He was officially declared free of the virus in January, but it has ravaged his liver, resulted in thyroid problems and other health issues, including depression, for which he's also being treated. To keep the disease in remission, Johnson is going through an experimental treatment that he said has been the worst part so far.

At first I thought this was funny but that's pretty sad. If he has health issues of this magnitude then he should probably step aside. Holy crap WTF?

Lucid or not, Johnson is obviously a 100% reliable vote for the Democrat line, even if they have to wheel him in with an IV drip in his arm.

This is going to be another Congressional seat that will soon be up for grabs, methinks.

BTW, I always wondered why his predecessor, Cynthia McKinney, never claimed she was undergoing treatment for mental disturbances.

Of course, she was the Green Party candidate for the Presidency in 2008, and she did support Cindy Sheehan replacing arch conservative Nancy Pelosi, so she couldn't have been all bad, could she?

I wish I knew what a "standard liberal Democrat" was. Last I knew the GOP was the only party that marched in lockstep.

The Congressman's statements, to me at least, are an overly wordy badly expressed attempt at sarcasm. I'm roughly the Congressman's age, same educational level, and I know none of my contemporaries (right or left) that would honestly believe an island can tip over. Frankly, I don't think even a pea brain like Michelle Bachmann would believe that.

This thread is an amazing grasp at straws. Although I did greatly admire the general for giving such a fast, comprehensive response with a straight face.

Johnson sounded nuts but he wasn't the only one with such a crazy idea. Early last century, a prominent scientist or a group of prominent scientists argued that people keep building more sky-scrappers in lower Manhattan eventually will tip that island. They even devised a a plan to vertically split Manhattan into 2 halves in case the downtown area sank it would not pull uptown below with it.

Be assured the Repubs have their own factions and their own internal disputes and are far from being in lockstep.

Johnson is not being sarcastic, he is truly delusional. Through long senility or through treatments for medical conditions matters not.

I have seen any number of Democrats, and more than a few Republicans, speak unintelligently, even get lost in a wayward thought. The difference here is that we have another sitting member of Congress that is mentally incapacitated and is being treated with kid gloves because he is a reliable, knee jerk vote for Democrat "progressives."

The video clip shows just how ludicrous this is, but it is one of many which show Johnson should be strongly encouraged to either resign or to abstain from his duties until he gains his mental equilibrium. This is solely the responsibility of the Democrat Party leadership and the Democrat majority leadership of the House (i.e. Pelosi.)

That they do not act simply reflects their lack of concern about Johnson's rationality - he continues to vote 100% Democrat Party line, after all.

If, however, he casts one single vote against the "progressive" agenda, he will be kicked out with whatever rationalizing might be convenient.

I dunno. If this had been sarcasm, it would have been a quickly worded quip, likely met with chuckles by everyone involved. Instead, he built up to it slowly and clumsily, going through a series of retarded questions about the size of the island. He also showed no smirk or any other non-verbal indication that he wasn't serious.

I thought Admiral Willard would break up laughing once he started replying. He had to reach up and physically pull at his eye to stop that oh-so-natural urge and remain serious and respectful.

I really think every military officer going before Congress these days must go through ever more extensive training in self-control lest they break out in hysterical laughter or jump over the table to strangle some of our esteemed Congresspeople.

I'd like to think this was an April Fools joke, but I'm not holding my breath.

Far more likely is that he had a significant hand in "health care reform"

From Johnson's site"

"The subtle humor of this obviously metaphorical reference to a ship capsizing illustrated my concern about the impact of the planned military buildup on this small tropical island."

It's obviously not obvious that this was a metaphor. Even the spin is lame.

Hank would make a good AGW advocate - which is also bizarre. At least Hank has liver damage dementia as an excuse.
