I have a hardware PCI 3com OEM modem, model # 2976.

in windows 9x, it appears to use Com 5, yet there is no such option to do so in Linux (goes from 1 to 4 if I remember correctly, tty0-tty3, btw what does tty stand for?) apparently. so what do I do? besides try each com port?

and can someone give me a good explanation of what a COM port is? it's been so long since I had to worry about these things, I can't remember! (good ole windows 3.x!)

btw, I have all of the serial ports disabled in windows, so this modem has chosen this port for some reason...

Actually it's ttyS<x> for serial ports. tty comes from the old days, and it stands for TeleTYpe. :)

Now, getting THAT modem to work...good luck. I did a quick search and no luck with any good instructions. Doesn't mean it won't work, just means that I don't know how to make it work, and that hopefully someone else does.

Hmmm, a 3Com PCI modem you say? Sounds a lot like a winmodem or softmodem if you will... There is only one model of 3com/USR PCI modem that will work in linux. If you don't know what I mean by a winmodem or softmodem it is a modem that requires software to tell it how to work, real modems just require a series of commands sent over the com port they are attached to. Most winmodems don't work in linux because nobody has bothered to write software drivers for them and they often require use of the com ports that could cause the other com ports trouble.

I don't think that one is a winmodem. At least it's not according to this page:

Linux and Winmodems

Just search for 2976 and you'll see the comments regarding that device.

If you have jumpers on the board, set it to com3 IRQ 4
and set your modem to tty2 in your dialer. If its not a winmodem, (see above) should work just fine.

first of all, I'm pretty sure it's not a winmodem (the place I got it from said it was a hardware modem, and they're pretty reliable for that kind of thing..), second of all, it's pretty new (56k), I don't think there are jumpers on it (I'll look though) for that kind of thing.

confirmed, from the link above,

"5. How about PCI modems? Are all PCI modems winmodems?
No, there are at least three types of controller-based PCI modems. They are somewhat more difficult to set up than a jumpered ISA modem or an external serial port modem. Linux 2.4 will probably include automagic setup of PCI hardware modems. If you are curious, these modems are:

Lucent Venus chipset: Multitech MT5634ZPX-PCI, Actiontec PCI56012 (IBM 33L4618 or GVC MD0223)
USR/TI Kermit chipset: the 3Com/USR 3CP5610 family, which includes models 5613, 5609,and OEM models 2976, 2977, and 3258,
TOPIC TP560i chipset: Zoom 2920 (Digitan DS550-558) and the Well Communications FM-56PCI-TP (GVC MD0321)."

as u can see, my modem is NOT a winmodem, yet it's not quite normal. it says linux 2.4 will probably automagic setup of PCI hardware modems.. what does that mean exactly, that it'll detect the modem properly? still, in kppp, I don't know what to put for the com port (TTYx).

Basically it means support for that type of hardware. :) Right now it's slim to none. You'd have to scour the net to see if anyone's got one up and running.

Try sensei's site though: LinuxNewbie.org

I've looked around a bit, and found that I can set which COM port that the modem uses.. with this modem, does that mean I can set it to whatever seems to work?

That modem is called the Hawk. It's a PCI Hardware modem. You may be able to find drivers for Linux from support.dell.com.

that link does not work...

Rendus, are you sure? all I know is it's an OEM model made by 3Com.
