More likely to be a bad CPU or bad motherboard?

Have a laptop which is trying really hard to live, but I am torn on what could be wrong. I have narrowed it down to a bad mobo, cpu or maybe some bios problem.

Here is what it does:

After plugging it in, the power led, ac adapter led come on. I can also open and close the dvd-rom drive. The bottom of the laptop (Toshiba) is warm when power is supplied for a while, the cpu fan spins every now and then. But nothing else. No video, no beeps. I plugged in the headphones, and hear a small "thud" when I power on or off.

I did apply arctic silver on both the heatsinks of the cpu and the gpu, then put the thing back together. Still, the same problem. I have done all that swapping out the ram, removing the cards, HD etc procedure. Also tried to power it up after each component was removed.

So, CPU or Mobo more likely? I have no idea as to how to clear the cmos, since the battery has two wires going to it which are soldered onto the battery. The battery appears to be putting out good voltage (3-4 volts I think it was).

CPU fan only spins "now and then?" That's not good. I'd guess the system may be turning itself off to save the cpu from burning up. Otherwise I would say dead/dying motherboard.

Well, I thought that the fan on laptops only ran when a certain temperature is reached, at least thats what I have seen in all of the other laptops. Desktops are different, and those fans always run.

All the laptops I've ever worked with had fan running constantly. Speed might vary somewhat depending on temps but the fan never shut down completely.

Hrm, looks like we are having a debate on if the fan runs all the time or not. All the laptops I have seen, only run the fan periodically. Anyone else want to confirm it?

I have noticed that motherboards fail at a much higher rate than CPUs. If I was left to guessing, I'd guess the motherboard.

on some the fan does run at different speeds, that i know just from sound.
dunno if some turn off, its possible.
and yea m/bs have much more chance to die than cpu. so many components...and allthose nice capacitors ready to leak;)

It is significantly more likely than not that something besides the cpu is dead. CPUs don't really die unless you over volt them.
