Two men are in the hospital Sunday night following an altercation that started with a racial slur, police said.

Phoenix Police spokesman Sgt. Tommy Thompson said that at about 7:45 p.m., a 48-year-old homeless Caucasian man at a convenience store in the area of 3100 W. Indian School Road hollered a racial slur at a 52-year-old African American who had driven into the parking lot in a Jeep Cherokee.

The 52-year-old man confronted the homeless man, who then stabbed him with a pair of scissors, Thompson said.

Thompson said the victim went back to the Cherokee and got a tire iron to defend himself before the homeless man stabbed him again in the arm. The victim then struck the aggressor in the head with the tire iron, he said.

Both men were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Thompson said.

It sounds like the guy followed him to his car so he may not had been able to drive off.

Real smart, getting into an altercation with a homeless guy over some name calling. Try /ignore next time dude. I am not defending the homeless guy but as WelshBloke has pointed out, how hard is it to drive away?

He had enough time to open the car, look around for the tire iron, get it out, get stabbed again then hit the guy but not enough time to open the car, get in and drive off?

It's hard to tell from the story but if he was being chased by the guy trying to stab him and trying to defend from it at the same time it's probably easier to grab what you can find and use it rather then trying to start a car if you are unable to close the door and have to get the keys.

Not to mention how you would feel if this guy is stabbing people for no reason and you do nothing to stop him.

The story is lacking a lot.
