Ahh, the wonders of not signing an NDA!

http://www.expreview.com/news/...1194333585d6811_1.html

Moving on from Crysis, expreview are now looking at 3DMark06 performance of Phenom.

Relatively speaking, it does better than Crysis, but still falls short of Kentsfield (10% slower in CPU score), let alone Yorkfield (15% slower).

I'd hate to say it, but it looks more and more likely that Anand's 'simulated Phenom' scores may turn out to be fairly similar to the real thing... and that Phenom will indeed be slower clock for clock. :(

It's not fake, it is an Engineering Sample with an unlocked multiplier. Notice how all the CPUs - Yorkfield, Kentsfield, Brisbane, Windsor, Conroe - in that article are running at 3GHz. They are trying to demonstrate performance across a variety of chips all running at the same clockspeed, nothing fishy here. ;)

Quad core from Intel is $1000 last I checked. Sure AMD can't offer clock for clock performance, but if they release at lower prices then they could be OK in terms of value for money.
Of course they will need to compete with the low end Q6600 pricing.

Huh? Let's think for a second here... this is an overclocked Phenom, there will be no 3GHz Phenom for quite some time.

A fair comparison would be the Phenom X4 2.4GHz @ ~$300 to the Q6600 @ ~$270, which would turn out to be ~90% the performance @ ~110% the price.

I think you're letting your hatred of Intel cloud your judgement here.

I'll second that.

We should know a lot more on the 19th, apparently Phenom launch day.

What we know from today's DailyTech article:

Phenom X4 9500 ...... 95-Watt ..... 2.2GHz .... $280.00 ... HD9500WCGDBOX
Phenom X4 9600 ...... ...................2.3GHz .... $320 ....... HD9600WCGDBOX
Phenom X4 9700 .... 125-Watt ....... 2.4GHz .... $330 ...... HD9700XAGDBOX

I think we know why their is no 3.0GHz!!!

I don't get your post.

On one hand you say Intel's quad core is $1000 but on the other say AMD needs to compete with the low end Q6600 pricing which is also a quad core?

Right now, Amd is going to have to have a release day price cut in order to compete with intel. This reminds me of the Prescott days where Intel was charging 110% for 90% performance, while still running hotter then the competition. Now AMD is is the same boat, the big difference here is that Intel still have almost every OEM under their thumb while AMD now has, what, two? (they are doing a lot better that way then they where before).

It really sounds like AMD has a lemon on there hands. Only way they can compete is to price cut the thing down to about $200. And they can't afford to do that :(

LOL, well your score was with an overclocked Q6600 @ 3.5GHz (I think? I bet that CPU-Z screeny is with it slowed to 6x multi due to EIST) and an overclocked 8800GT that isn't much slower than a GTX @ stock anyway. :p

Because the new stepping works better and all the dies have been diverted to where the money is, the Opterons. That's why Supermicro and Cray are announcing new systems. What the Phenom ends up with is the dies made from the previous stepping.

And it's an engineering sample chip on an early bios as well, so it's probably not as meaningful as some believe it to be.

Didn't you say this about Barcelona too?

It's time to quit making excuses for AMD.

Phenom=dud.

And why's that? Don't you think that they deserve to be tested properly? I would wait till Nov 19th and then make my final analogy. Anandtech is probably working on that shootout as we speak.
Like i said before if Phenom fails i'm getting my yorkfield for sure.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't you expect Phenom to be faster than Penryn clock for clock? Do you still think that will be the case with a retail stepping and updated BIOS?

I honestly don't know either way (none of us do yet)...that's the point.
But I certainly think it's easily possible...

Viditor is such an AMD fanboy it's hilarious =\ Remember when Anandtech's review of the Barc said the Phenom scales better at higher frequencies? Lawl He's absolutely ridiculous. I'm loyal to no brand, I want the best for my dollar and if that means I'm going to spend 500 on a CPU I want the best 500 CPU possible, I don't care if something costs 30% less and offers only 20% less performance. I want the best.

Watch the personal insults. Not warranted. Please edit this post ASAP.

It's easy to tell who's a fanboy of which company...

Reserve judgment until final benchies come out Nov. 19th. Empirical evidence with shipping retail product averaged over many samples is the only way to know for sure...

Ok, everybody, enough with the fanboy comments. Talk about the tech, not the poster.
