More important for a server: CPU speed or Memory quantity?

As in a FTP server and a game server for about 6 people.

I have the option of using a 733 PIII (oced 550 (5.5 x 133) or a 1GHz (100FSB) TBird. I have 512mb of Crucial PC133 and 256mb of Infineon "so-so" memory.

IOW, I can use the 512 of good memory with either the slower PIII or the faster TBird. What to do? Both boxes have 7200rpm HDs, BTW.

To answer your question, both.

Specifically? Your hardware setup should be more than enough for what you want it to do.

your specs re more then enough for what you have. only 6 people ona server is not much of a load and FTP is more bandwidth intensive.

The specs you listed should be easily more then adequate to drive an FTP/Game Sever for only 6 people.

And FWIW, I can honestly say your the first person I've ever heard of that overclocks their server. :p

OK. Thanks much gents. Well, I guess technically, it is overclocked. However, almost all PIII 550e CPUs (5.5x100) will do 732 (5.5x133) without a problem. As a matter of fact, mine will do 5.5x145 w/o even raising the voltage! I got a real winner w/this chip.

Granted, at 145FSB, my PCI bus gets a bit wacky, but at 133, everything but the CPU is in spec and it runs like a champ. So, OCed? Yes. But OCed? No. If you get my meaning. Thanks for the input, though.

I still haven't decided which CPU I'm going with. If I make the TBird my server, it will be on an Abit KT7-Raid, which is rock-stable as long as you don't try to OC anything. That KT7 chipset sucks booty for OCing. But, when it was my main rig, it was good to go.

For the needs you specified, either speed cpu should be fine. FTP isn't all that cpu intensive.
