I was looking for a VGA -> DVI adapter, as my video card has only DVI output while the monitor is VGA. Well, Radio Shack didn't have any, so I started calling places up to see who did. CompUSA has them, but only through the website. I call Best Buy, and no joke, the guy tried telling me they don't exist. He says, "Not gonna happen. Can't do analog to digital, it's like blah blah blah blah" I cut him off, informing him they exist and my friend has 3 of them. He's completely baffled. He quickly recovers and in an effort to cover up his ignorance he stutters out "Do they work?" and then "You'd probably get really low quality blah blah blah". What a moron.

The guy at Best Buy was correct. You can't do VGA to DVI. But you can have a DVI to VGA connector. And only if the graphics card supports this feature. Basically, the DVI connector spec has wires for both analog and digital signals.

bwhahah i love it when someone post about how dumb such and such employes are and end up being WRONG and posting about it! LOL I LOVE IT!

guess malak wouldnt make the cut at BB eh? heh

I worked at BB for a bit but quit because people there are morons and the management tries to brainwash you. I only worked to improve my people skills. Here is one of the incidents that still cracks me up.

I used to work in Media sales and occasionally I would have to go to the warehouse which was behind the computer department. I was going by there once and one of the computer sales guys was talking to this couple buying a laptop for their son. He kept saying how the laptop had integrated video card and not shared so their son's games wouldn't be lagged at all. The couple said "Are you sure? Our son loves those shooter games like Halo and thats like half the reason he wants it." The salesman was like sure, this laptop has 32 MB of the Intel Extreme Graphics video card which is really good (this was summer of 2004). I interrupted him and pointed out that he was wrong and also told the couple to check out the E-machines 6811 laptop and that it might be a better choice. The guy argued with me for like a minute and then shut up and started talking about the 6811 to them.

After I quit, I went back before Black Friday to check out what they were stocking up and ran in to the same guy again. I jokingly asked him if he still thought the integrated video card is better and he started saying all this BS about how he was right in that case and some other BS about discrete and integrated video cards (sounded like he read it online or something and did not have a clue what he was saying).

God know how many times I heard the Digital/ Analog crap. One guy was selling cordless phones and his line was "This thing is digital so there are a bunch of 1s and 0s going between the headset and the cradle and not a real signal". I was taking a senior level communications class in EE at the time and I started laughing right in front of him.

Well, hopefully the OP tried to explain why he needed the adapter because the saleman should have known he meant DVI=>VGA. Of course, again, this is Best Buy we're talking about.

I tried cancelling TiVo service earlier this month and told them I was returning the unit to Amazon (had the unit for 1 day) and the CSR tells me "Uhh, you can't return it. Amazon won't take it back." and I said "Yes I can. I already have a prepaid postage printed out and ready to ship." and he then says "Oh well they'll charge you a restocking fee". He was acting like an Amazon CSR .. what a moron.

You'll get some of the stupidest people on the phone sometimes. It doesn't surprise me that you got an idiot on the phone at BB.

I don't think those exist, only DVI to VGA exist. It converts the DVI signals from the card to VGA for the monitor. Do they create adapters the convert VGA signals from the card to DVI for the monitor?

Actually to be fully correct the adapters actually do not conver t the signals. The VGA signal is already there if it is a DVI-I output on the video card. If it had DVI-D this would not be possible with a simple passive adapter.

It seems to me converters are often described backwards.... VGA -> DVI, or USB -> PS/2.

You can't.

You can do digital to analog or analog to digital. However, you won't find cheap systems for video quality signals, let alone for monitor ones (bigger resolution, faster refresh)

You can get em for like $3-5 at Newegg + shipping.

Sure, but shipping from Newegg is about $25 so it's the same price. ;)

Ok so apparently I said it backwards. But I explained my situation to every person. I had a video card that was dvi and a monitor that was vga. My thought was vga -> dvi because the vga is the male and the dvi is the female.

But still, all the other merchants could figure it out.

Um, the conversion is from DVI (digital) to VGA (analog), the picture from your video card to your monitor. Who gives a flying flip about male/female? If you bought gender changers and different cables all that would be null.

HAHAHA!! So the BB guy was right all along? There's no such thing as VGA->DVI adapter.

DVI->VGA means DVI to VGA on the video card. Maybe the OP was talking about using his CRT monitor in a DVI video card, hence he said VGA->DVI?

I dunno.

No, he was still wrong, because I explained every time my situation, which was clearly dvi -> vga. I simply said it backwards because I had never seen one before and just thought male -> female. It's not my fault BB couldn't figure it out. Like I already said, every other merchant did.

Sorry but doesn't a modem convert analog signal to digital signal? They don't make a converter for video signal though. Just gender changers.

Yeah, you're right. It's their fault that they couldn't detect your completely-backwards mistake. Those sons of bitches should all be fired for not realizing that you made a mistake, and then correcting it without telling you and letting you know whether or not they had the product that you were actually curious about, despite the fact that you said it completely wrong. That's, that's just shoddy business practice right there. I'd go straight to the better business bureau so that someone can tell these Best Buy chumps what's what. I mean, that's what I'd do. Those pricks.

Well, that's the point to customer service. I guess you've never had a job in it. Don't know why you gotta be a prick about it, clearly every other business I talked to knows what they are doing and could figure out what I wanted. The point is that the people at BB don't. Even if I say it backwards, I still explained the situation, which says exactly what I needed. I didn't know what the adapter was called, never seen nor needed one before. It's not my fault I just guessed with what little I knew and they couldn't go from there.

lol.. you got pwned by best buy. In this case, I believe you're the n00b at this one...

Just because you know what DVI and VGA are doesn't make you a computer pro. now STFU and admit that you made a mistake, which you did, and it's not BB's fault for not supplying you with what doesn't exist.

I think their point is, how can you make fun of someone for not knowing something, when you don't even know that particular something? Thats what they meant by you owned yourself, lol. Relax. It's not half as bad as when I made fun of Skoorb for saying his ar has 6 ignition coils. Stupid Nissans really do have six ignition coils! I still don't get that. I would think you'd run more risk of damaging the engine if one went bad on a car with 6 coils than if you just had one, and the car wouldn't run. But I digress....
