More frames in F.E.A.R. w/ RAM?

I'm not quite squeezing the FPS out of F.E.A.R. that I wish I could get. When I turn a corner or hit any firefight, there is pretty significant slowdown. I have an AGP 8X slot, so I can't really go much higher with my video card (see sig).

Does anyone think there would be any gaming benefit to going from 1GB of RAM to 2GB? Do the latest and greatest games like F.E.A.R. and Quake 4 need that kind of RAM?

I would backdown on my resolution (1280x1024) to get more frames, but my 19" LCD only looks good at this resolution...so that option is out.

Let me know what you think!

Thanks,

I'm not sure. My game runs silky smooth 40 FPS w/ medium textures, AA x4, most other settings on high (no soft shadows).

P4 3.0 w/800 Mhz FSB
512 MB x2 generic RAM
6800 GT (stock speeds)

Our rigs aren't that much different. Can't imagine more RAM helping your FPS out *too* much.

2GB will only help your load times, its true for BF2, but for f.e.a.r.....I played the demo on 1GB, then 2GB and 2GB def was a smoother experience.

FEAR only uses 680Mb of RAM on my machine, including the OS usage.

I think he meant:

"Usually an additional 1 GB of RAM will only serve to help your loads times (such as the case in BF2). But for F.E.A.R., I think that an additional 1 GB will actually help the overall experience. In my testing, 2 GBs certainly made for a smoother experience."

I have 2 GB of RAM and when playing the demo I had a minimum of 700 MB of free memory. Currently with a few things running I have 1600 MB of free memory.

When I first downloaded the demo I was running 1GB of memory, and to tell you the truth, it ran like crap. I put 2gigs of memory in my rig, and it ran like butter (good).

According to some tests run on a site (can't remember where), 2GB did nothing above 1GB, and it was 100% GPU limited even with a 7800GTX with a processors above a 3GHz Intel or about 1.8GHz AMD64

Hmmm...if faster load times are the only benefit, then it might not be worth the upgrade.

I never played BF2 so I can't really compare the experiences.

However I am playing Quake 4 now as well and I have found it runs smoother on my system and looks at least as pretty as F.E.A.R. Perhaps some ATI driver optimizations can help my frames in F.E.A.R.? F.E.A.R.'s particle effects do trumps Q4's, so this is probably the source of the lagging frame rates.

Have you made sure you have no viruses or spyware? How many unecessary programs do you have running? Stop them from starting, or turn them off before you play.

Viruses and spyware are both clean; no problems there.

I don't have any extra programs running in the tray at all, so I think I have as many resources as possible freed up.
