they didn't ask for volunteers?
usually the airline keeps upping the offers till someone comes forward.

and why this guy?
They asked for volunteers and none came forward, then they randomly kicked 4 people off...from what i read

What he said. They asked for volunteers and nobody accepted, so they 'chose'.

Really though, why not just make the employees take the later flight? I hope this doc lets some high priced lawyers rip United apart. I'd turn this into a PR nightmare if I were him (which seems to be exactly what's happening, at least via social media).

Obviously United needs to be hot with repercussions, but I also think be the security company should have serious liability. The response to a request to violently remove a randomly chosen passenger who has done nothing wrong should be no.

It sounds like they were flying the employees to work a flight from another location, so either regulations be regarding rest or the flight schedule meant the employees had be to be on that flight.

That is United's problem, though. They should have just kept raising the offer until someone took it.

Regulations don't state that they need to be on that flight, regulations state that the other plane can't take off without them, or someone else to fill their role (most likely that hasn't been flying all day) just as you stated. The airline can F right off if they are either so understaffed or so overbooked that they have to attempt to kick people off a flight to continue facilitating their flights.

Agreed on your last point though, they could have gone higher. Someone would have taken it at $2,000 in cash, how much will this cost them?

Continental use to be a decent airline, but after merging to become United, they became such garbage now. Not surprised they would be so short sighted as to let this happen.

Yeah, no kidding. That's usually what they do. It's always a fun game my wife and play to see how far the voucher goes before someone takes it. Starts at $200-$400 and I've seen them go up as high as $1200. Bet that extra couple hundred bucks in voucher cost would have been a hell of a lot cheaper than the lawsuit and negative publicity from this incident.

For real? Sounds like just the sort of clothing to wear to help swiftly move through TSA's sexual assault.

The 2 females in question were employee family members and had to meet a required dress code while flying. They put on dresses over their leggings and departed on their scheduled flight.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/03/26/women-barred-flight-wearing-leggings/

"The passengers this morning were United pass riders and not in compliance with our dress code for company benefit travel. We regularly remind our employees that when they place a family member or friend on a flight for free as a standby passenger, they need to follow our dress code.

"To our regular customers, your leggings are welcome."

Crap like this happens all the time but the airlines keep on flying because people need to go places.

I don't understand why they boarded the plane first. That made this situation a hell of a lot worse imo. Let people freak out in the terminal.

Utter incompetence on the part of the airline staff and the security personnel. I wouldn't be shocked if there was also some stupid process restriction at play here that prevented them from going higher then the $800 they offered.

What blows about the offered deal is you are stuck at some crappy hotel near the airport and do t get out till the next afternoon. They couldn't have made the offer more unattractive if they tried.

Yep. Stupid and lazy decision making. Someone should get F'd for this.

Nice move cheapskates. Now you have a video of a punched out doctor being dragged from your plane with a stream of blood on his face.
Bravo!

The world was a better place in the 90s.
Think about that...

No it wasnt.

Across the entire globe, all problems have been slowly getting better.
The WORLD was a better place in the 90's.
America has been going downhill in some ways, but lets face it, we were pretty fucking soft and spoiled for decades.
The terrorist attacks on September 11th were supposed to be a wake-up call.
Americans are just as dumb, ignorant, and lazy as they were before the attacks. So really, its all our fault.

Also, airlines have been overbooking and screwing passengers since commercial flight began. The only difference is now people have really nice cameras in their pockets to record the incidents.

This. Overall, the world is getting better year-over-year. A few things are worse (such as security theater) but overall, everything's better than it was. Note that it improves less quickly for those already at the top of the heap ('Murica).

Time for that guy to get a lawyer. That was a horrible move for the airline. They should raise up the price of compensation instead of $800. Latest news, one of the guys that pulled the doctor is being put on leave.

I am sure the corporatist SCOTUS majority will vote for United if a case ever reaches them.

United is a hot mess. I was on an overbooked flight and they were offering an $800 voucher to take a flight seven hours later. I've never flown United without there being some kind of cluster. Broken aircraft, no air craft, no crew, overbooked... They need to get slapped down hard and overbooking should be met with tremendous fines.
