Would you rather go from 2 to 4 cores or from 2GB to 6GB of RAM? I have to choose one and either one will speed things up for me.

what do you do in an average day?

playing wow? more ram. video encoding? more cores.

Gonna need more specifics than that.

Game (BFBC2, Oblivion, less and less WoW), Program/Compile, use Linux in VM, and have a lot of various programs open at once. I think either will be a nice boost.

In that case, RAM. I'd go with at minimum 4gb these days for gaming, serious multitasking, or any CPU intensive work.

What CPU are you using right now?

Phenom X2 550, but Asus was lame and didn't enable ACC on my SB710 motherboard. So would need a new motherboard just to check if it unlocks.

I'd go for more cores. 2GB is still a lot IMO. Nothing wrong with that.
See if you can't get a Biostar mobo in the FS/FT for cheap that would let you test unlocking. If so then win.

both suck
you need 4gb for good multitask gaming/encoding. and 4 cores for good multitask/gaming/encoding.

4GB ram is probably more useful for gaming than 4 cores. A kick ass rig won't do much good if it runs out of free memory...
