Most of the BFG GT's will hit Ultra speeds (400/1.1) no problem. Haven't tried it on mine yet çuz I haven't found anything that needs it! ;)

this past Saturday, I checked local inventory on the BB site and it shows several stores have stock. starting calling around at 10:10am.

Store 1 (closest), nope don't got 'em
Store 2 - have 1 left, sold two this morning already, can't hold it (30 minutes away, not going to waste time as it'll be gone by the time I get there)
Store 3 - have 1 left, can't hold it (45 minutes away)
Store 4 - have 1 left, can't hold it (60 minutes away)

Called store 1 back (5 minutes from my house) another goober says 'no we don't have them' I state the website says they do. Nope, we don't, it's wrong.

Paused for a diet coke to decide if I want to make the run around town to see if I can get lucky, decided I'd pass, and go mow the lawn. Two hours later the site shows all stores are out of stock except #1. So I call back, and badger another goon - YOU SURE you don't have them? POSITIVE! Can you check? No need, we don't got em.

Not convienced, I go to store 1. shelf has the price tag but no stock. I look up at the laptop lockup and see qty 1 BFG6800GT OC sitting on top of the OfficeXP boxes. Head to the counter, grab the first available goon after 10 minutes of waiting, drag them to the lockup area.

Me - "Me wants (pointing to the card)"
BB Goon - "It's not for sale!"
Me - "What do you mean it's not for sale?"
BB Goon - "It's on hold"
Me - "WTF do you mean it's on hold, I just called every BB in this town they had stock and said they couldn't' hold them"
BB Goon - "It's' on hold, sorry"
Me - "Get the manager"
BB Manager - "It's on hold, sorry"
Me - "Get me the box, and show me the name, then explain to me why I've called every BB intown and they've all told me it's against policy to hold items and wouldn't do it for me."
BB Manager - "It's on hold for an employee"
Me - "Then get me your area manager's phone number, I'd like to tell him how you guys turned down a paying pissed off customer"

5 minutes later I'm walking out the door with my 6800GT ;)

Hey hang on a moment here :) when I went to the local BB the guy said something about it being on hold and then I think he mumbled something about a preorder. Is it possible for them to hold a card for someone under any circumstance? If not, I plan on going again tommorow and demanding it some more hehe.

they cant hold it for long, the guy said he can try to hold it for a day, but i think if someone demands for it, they will give it up since the person didnt pay for it.

I got one at the Clackamas BB Store in Portland,OR today around 1:30pm PST. Overclocked @ 400/1100 and running some testing with the Forceware 65.62 drivers. Just ran 3DMark2001SE for a 20,100+ score. Downloading 3DMark03 now.

Just in case anyone else is still looking, I've learned today that if a store has 2 left, it's really 1 because the other one is for display and can't be sold.

The BB in my area had no problems holding one for me. Didn't even ask how long I'd be. ?? I guess it's a gamble. Nice job getting one though.

I checked my local Best Buy (Huntsville, AL) this past Saturday (8/7/04) and was told by an employee who worked in Computers that a shipment of 6800 GT's would arrive late Wednesday night. So, I went to the store today to pick up my shiny new BFG 6800 GT only to hear that they never have had any in stock, and have no idea when they will recieve any. So, I checked with another guy, and he told me that no store in the area has any either. I'm really frustrated as of right now, and am debating whether to bid on some BFG's from E-Bay that are only about $50 more.

Wow slug, you're getting quite a run-around. Obviously all BBY's are a little diff, but I can't think of any circumstance that would cause a store not to be able to sell all of their stock. Generally, they have the cards just out on a shelf. Some stores put them in plastic cases to prevent theft. But I have never heard of nor can I fathom a "floor model." This should only apply to computers, printers, etc: real units that they need a working model of for customers to use. I'd love to know how they plan to demonstrate a 6800GT in the box :p
Don't take that shite, go get your card! But as a warning, even though their inventory system says they have some; there is a chance that they don't. From my experience, inventory updates rather quickly; but it seems some stores' systems take a few days for some damn reason. Probably a processing error on there end, but nevertheless possible. If you go into that store and their computer says they have some "Available On Hand," then don't leave until you've gotten up everybody's ass. Someone will find the real answer for you, just search around. ;)
BTW, about the "we can't hold it" junk: it is an unofficial policy that BBY employees cannot hold a product. However, this does not HAVE to be the case. If you make enough of a commotion, they will hold the product. If the store associate won't, get his manager. If his manager won't, get another manager. If he won't, then either get the Store manager (GM) or ask for the District Manager's number. Explain to them that you want to spend $400 in their store and if they cannot put your damn name on a box for a couple hours that you will take it up with Best Buy Corporate. I am truly sorry that you all have to go through this BS. I myself did everything I could to get a guy a 6800GT today, but he ended up just taking the 6800 OC until we get the GT in. But I damn sure explored every option. And actually I did help stryker999 get one, even though I'm in NC & he's in Oregon. I hope he got off his butt to get get it :p but at least I was able to help someone. I hate that the few individuals (probably more than a few) are ruining Best Buy's reputation this way. I apologize for all of their rat-fvcker asses

then why on earth would they sell the only one they received? the only GT (between 2 BBs) here in town didn't even make it to the shelf...

While I believe everything you're saying, I'm not quite sure what else I can do. I've called them three times and went over there twice, and no one has any idea of where else to look for the card. I've talked to the manager of the computer department, but no one above his level. Maybe I'll try again tomorrow, but I don't know what else to ask them.

Yes you did most certainly help me get one, and I could not have done it without you. I owe you big time man! I have it in my grubby little hands, and all the other components arrived from NewEgg today too. They definitely wouldn't listen to me as a stupid customer trying to tell them that their computer systems were NOT broken and they DID actually have them in stock, even if they couldn't find them. I'm going to get in contact with Best Buy Corporate, recommend fbrdphreak (aka Tim) get a raise and a hearty pat on the back, and recommend the snappy manager I spoke to get at least a smack on the wrist. Best Buy corporate definitely needs to know about this problem in their stores, and the fact that the managers are unwilling to help even when I was going to drop 400 dollars in their store. It really really helps when they hear from another BBY employee that their computers are not broken and they just need to get off their asses and look. TheSlug - maybe you can get fbrdphreak to do the same thing for you, as he's a nice enough guy I'm sure he'd be willing to help out. Best of luck...

I almost bought one today at BestBuy in Brooklyn. I called them during the day but couldn't get through the customer service. The computer dept phone kept ringing then I got transferred to the cust. service. Asked for the computer dept. they put me on and still it kept ringing and ringing. I got frustrated and hung up the phone.
After work I drove by the place. As soon as I walked in I saw a guy walking around with a 6800GT. I went over to the comp. dept only to see they had none in the shelves. They only had the price tag for the product. I found a sales person, he went to the back and came out with one. I was so happy for a few seconds only to realize it was a 6800 card. I found the same sales person, he went to the back to check for a GT. He came out a few minutes later and told me they had none left.
I sought out the guy with the GT card and found him by the cashiers. I said, "Looks like you grabbed the last card in the store." He told me that he called 20 minutes earlier and BB told him they had 2 cards. By the time he got there, the other was gone already.
I missed this card by 2 minutes. If I had hit one less red light, I probably would be installing it right now. lol
Guess, I'll keep on trying.

Man...That's rough! I bought Doom 3 today, and I'm just staring at the box sitting on my desk. I can't play it with my GeForce 2 MX, so I've gotta play the waiting game until Chumbo.com has more stock or Best Buy starts to carry it at the store. Either way, I'm gonna be waiting for a while. Oh well. I guess it'll be a funny memory when I look back on it in a few years and remember the craze/hysteria that surrounded the 6800 GT series! I've got an outside chance of snagging one off of E-Bay, but I highly doubt I'll win any of the ones I'm bidding on. I have made a promise to myself to go no higher than $50 over M.S.R.P. with shipping included, so I don't end up being one of the suckers that pays $550 for GT.

Alright, any other suggestions then? I've talked to one guy in head of computers there twice already (I think he's getting tired of me asking). :p Should I ask the general manager for help?

BFG 6800 Ultra, $175 price jack at computerHQ.com
Anyone feel like being an idiot go be my guest. They have
17. At that price i guarantee you they will sell MAYBE 1 card..
then their stock sill sit at 16 for a few days, then they will lower
it by like 10 dollars. then it will sit there for a few days.
Then in a while everynoe will get some in stock and they will drop the
prices and feel no shame about it either.

Sick.

Newegg continues to lose my business..

They just got 6800U's in stock, and marked them up $84 over retail + Shipping.. What kinda BS is that?

I'm sorry but any company engaged in price gouging THAT bad, isn't getting my future business, thats just retarded...

$84 over retail + shipping isn't bad price gouging in my opinion. It is supply vs. demand. Right now the demand is much greater than supply, therefore price is high. There are a lot of people out there willing to pay for those cards and it is the business' right to get those people's patronage. And you can do worse than $84 over retail. I always expect new technlogy to cost out the ass, NewEgg or not.

Screw it. Best buy lost my business. I'm in line for the Ultra at Chumbo.
I can't let this card run my life anymore than it has. I'll get it when I get it.

I was in the BB in Holmdel, NJ, they had 1 6800 in stock, but I already have a GT so I did not bother.

My store (well, my old one; transferring to Raleigh, NC as of next week) got in another GT and had several 6800's. So my observation is that Best Buy is finally increasing the supply to their stores. My prediction: give it a couple weeks and BFG 6800 GT's will be plentiful enough that the people who have been waiting to find one will have it. Just keep up with your stores! (Or give up and pay some more for another brand to get it sooner ;))

Well...After much thought and contemplating, I've decided to go with the eVGA 6800 GT from Newegg.com for $429 (shipping included). One part of me wants to wait and see if my local Best Buy will have the BFG in stock, but I decided to go ahead and try the eVGA cause its available now. I guess if I'm not happy with the eVGA, I can always E-Bay it and get my money back.
