You have the Doom Edition BFG.. Your picture shows the DOom3 on the box, and you have the custom HSF setup..

Friend tells me the manager at best buy showed him a memo stating this is a limited production run, they will be back to the referenced HSF after they run out.. True or not, I don't know, but i'm glad I got one if thats the case. I don't like the referenced HSF one bit..

ummm...well.... I just saw at BFG web site. The regular 6800 shown at the web site has the same HSF. So they BFG slapped the HSF for regular 6800 on 6800GT and they call it Doom3 Edition?
I guess this deserves "WTF?!"

p.s. I just sent an email to BFG tech support to find out what the real deal is.

Mine also had the Doom3 sticker on it, and I agree the new cooler is nice.

So the computer glitch thing is just their excuse for not being able to find one? My bestbuy shows 3 in stock on their computers, the lady told me, and then she said that they're probably still being shipped. Is that not possible? Should I just wander down there with the SKU and ask to see the manager so he can find them for me?

Returned mine to the Brooklyn, NY Best Buy if anyone local was hoping to pick one up. Couldn't justify the cost.

I just purchased one yesterday from BB. Removed my Overclocked 9700pro and dropped it in with the latest drivers. Running Doom3 @ 1280x1024 4xAA 8xAF Ultra High Quality and its very smooth. Best looking game experience period. I am one thats wants smooth framerate over everything else, this card is truly amazing, my goal of 1280x1024 with very high AA/AF and detail are not met. Its worth every penny if you want to play Doom3 like its supposed to look.

2.5ghz AMD64
Epox NForce3 250 board
1.5gb HyperX PC4000 (running at 554mhz)
9700pro OC to 378/342

Old Scores : 3dmark2001 19,812
: 3dmark2003 5672
: AquaMark 43,790

New Scores : 2001 21,890
: 2003 11,384
: Aquamark 65,432

Well, after my little rant about best buy employees hoarding them behind the counter, i walked into best buy on the way home from work and lo and behold, one BFG 6800 GT was sitting on the top shelf. I spent a good 25 minutes milling about the store trying to decide if i should snag it or not. Needless to say, next thing I remember is walking past the inventory control guy who remarked 'nice graphics card' as he checked my reciept.

Now I gotta either order the rest of my computer or figure out how to cram this card into my powerbook. I think it'll be the former ;) Anyways, thanks for the tips with regards to when the stores get new stock - helped me out a bunch. Maybe these things are finally starting to arrive en masse.

I'd also be curious to hear what tech support told you about the 'doom 3 edition,' link. This was the model that was on shelves at my store.

FWIW, there was no placard with the price on it at my Best Buy. The card was just sitting on the top shelf alone. My own rampant speculation leads me to believe that these cards *are* starting to fill channels. I've been watching new egg w/ their auto notify feature and while they always sell out quickly (3-4 hours after i get my email) the time between shipment is going down from weeks to days.

If you're really interested in the BFG and buying at retail price isn't a problem, I'd check back often at your local best buy. Chat some of the more interested-looking employees up. Every big store like that usually has a few guys on staff who are really on top of things (they're the kinds of people who will come to boards like these and give people the straight dope). With luck, the etailers will drop down to retail prices (its completely farsical for it to be cheaper for me to go to best buy and pay sales tax than order from an etailer - i think they'll shape up soon)

The sad thing is, its gonna be more of the same for probably a good year with the PCIe factor. Hopefully after that things will calm down until the DX10/Longhorn cards come out (and you can bet it will be another feeding frenzy when that happens)

Friend at Best Buy said another shipment of BFG's arrived at some stores today. Your mileage may vary depending on state, but here is how to check..

Go to www.bestbuy.com, search for "6800", then find the card, then use "Check local availability", put in your zip code, and how far you are willing to drive.. A list of stores will come up, either grey or black, black means that they most likely DO have them in stock, or at least did within the last day.

Next, either call, or drive up to one that says they have them, you won't see them on the shelf usually, and likely won't even see a space for them. Depending on the store, they keep them either high on the canopy, above the endcap canopy, in one of the cages on the floor, or in the cage in the tech area/back room. Most regular sales associates don't have a clue where to look.

Next, have the sales guy check the computer for this SKU: 6684652 Thats the SKU for the BFG6800GT, if it says they got em, they got em, make them look for them.. If it doesn't, check the list that comes up for the closest store that has them, and write down the names/locations while he has the screen up..

Looking at my local Best Buys list today (no, I don't work there, i'm just a bored rich guy that hangs out there buying toys), theres a store on Gratiot in Michigan that got 3 in this morning(amoung others, but most stores local to me, seem to have at least 2-3 today in stock)... So they are arriving, just have to get lucky, and have good timing. Good luck.

The grey/black thing is BS, at least with these cards. All of my stores showed black... NONE have them

Well, I posted this same thing in other threads over a week ago, but its all good.

As far as the website thing goes with gray/black, don't rely on that. Just call up to the store and have them look up that SKU number at the beginning of this thread. Ask them how many they have "available on hand." If they have any, which most sales people will not lie about after JUST looking it up, hang up and call back. Talk to Customer Service and ask to speak to either the "PC Area Manager" or just a sales manager. These guys love to sell stuff that makes them money, so tell them you WILL BUY that card and that they should hold it for you AT THE CUSTOMER SERVICE DESK. Give them your full name and then immediately steal a Ferrari to get to Best Buy (just kidding, sorta). Then buy your damn card!! :p
It is sad that so many people have bad experiences with Best Buy salesman, 'cuz I've seen the flaming threads. Follow these steps and you should be golden. If for some reason it ISN'T there, get a manager and reach up his @$$ until you can tickel his tonsels. They'll do something nice for you, like maybe a discount when the card does come in. 'Cuz BBY does happen to make about $90 on the card, so they have some leeway if they tell you they don't make jack selling it. Good luck to all, 'cuz I'm enjoying my card ;)

P.S. The stores in my district each got 2-3 cards and they disappeared within 2 days of getting them in stock. Act quickly ;)

Just got back from my local best Buy, and I was succesful in finally getting a BFG 6800 GT OC. It is one of the Doom III packs with the silver/heat pipe cooling.

Funny story about my quest to get this card. I read the posts about people getting these cards on Monday (9 Aug). I checked the BB Website and noticed that my local Store was higlighted in Bold black when I checked stores having available quantities. I immediately drove to the store and checked the shelves but there were none. I then checked with the computer clerks and they said that they had not seen it and that none had been received. They checked the back room also to see if they were there. They told me to check back Wed, as a truck was coming in Tues night. I later called another store near me and they said they had 4 cards but could not sell them until next Tues (17 Aug) as that was the release date.
I went back to original closest BB store this morning (Wed 11 Aug) and checked in with the same computer clerk. He said that none had come in. I asked him to please check the model number in his computer to see if any showed up as in stock. He begrudgingly checked it and it showed as none in stock. As I was leaving the store, a good friend of mine was working the front security post and I relayed to her that I was looking for a video card and I felt I was getting the run-around. As we were speaking, another young lady who was working the CD section overheard us and offered to look the model number up in her computer. She punched the number in and lo and behold it showed that the store had 2 in stock. She said wait one minute, and soon she emerged form the back room with 2 BFG 6800 GT's. The funny thing is that the Computer guy I originally dealt with had followed her in and he came out with all kinds of excuses why he could not find it. He also grabbed the other card and took it to the front of the store. Not sure what he was going to do with it. Anyway I got my card.

Just out of curiousity which store is this? I went to the Rockville, MD one which their website had listed as having them in stock. I gave a salesman the SKU # who looked it up on his computer and it said they had two in stock. But after checking about five different places, including the back room, and talking to two other people, they couldn't find any.

The store I dealt with was in New Hampshire. As I said, the clerks I dealt with did the whole looking in back routine etc. however, I found that one very nice young lady in the CD section who seemed to know exactly where to find these cards. I am wondering if the Employees are holding these things back for themselves.

You may also want to suggest to the MD store clerks, to look in any locked cabinets. I read in forum that some people got thirs out of a locked cabinet in front of store. If their computer shows that there are some in stock then they are in the store and you should seek help from a higher supervisor until they are found.

Is it possible their computer just hadn't updated yet and the two were actually already sold?

I went to that same store, as it's the one closest to me and the website said that they had GTs in stock. I asked a guy there and after looking in their database, he said that not only do they not have any in stock, but the store does not carry that item at all. I didn't think much of it at the time but after reading some experiences here, I'm pretty sure his comments were BS. He seemed to not know anything about the item, but he may well have faked it. At any rate, I got one from the Germantown BB last weekend.

I just called them back..Between the time when I went there today and now, somehow the quantity available there has dropped down from two to one. Either their system was late in updating, or somehow someone bought one after I went there. I'm considering going back there and telling them to look for the other.
