More bad news rumors for Fermi

Long story short: BSON is saying AIB's have confirmed that the gtx480 will only have 480 SP's, not 512. The 512 parts are very low in yield and are being exclusively reserved for the Quadro line. In slightly good news to consumers though, nvidia is pricing the cards competitively - the gtx470 may be priced between a 5850 and 5870.

Personally, I've been anxiously awaiting nvidia's return to high end competition, but with all the negative rumors and delays my expectations are so low at this point I've nearly over it.

If the gtx 480 matches and sometimes slightly beats the gtx295, all in all that's still pretty good. But I think an A4 spin, a la fermi 2, is going to be the fermi nvidia wanted to have all along - higher clocks and all shaders unlocked. At least I hope.

They are on crack.

If the 470 is priced and performs between a 5850 and a 5870, that would be a good product, normally, and maybe still will be. The problem now is how will people respond to it being 6 months late, its rumored furnace impression, and probable supply issues?

Fudzilla has a post up today saying the 480 looks like it will be priced at 450 Euros, relative to the 5870 at a current 375 Euros. If that's true, I'd question whether or not its going to be profitable for NV, but at least its good for us.

There is no A4. It's going to be B1. There is no reason to call it Fermi 2 as well.

From what I understand, B1 will still be the gtx470 and gtx480. I am talking about the next iteration of fermi, which has already been alluded to from semiaccurate and fudzilla. There is no question in my mind that these reports are likely accurate and nvidia is going to have a shorter-than-usual turn around time in introducing a high performance refresh part. And I expect it's performance improvements to be comparable to what they between the fx5800 and fx5900.

The difference is that most people want last generation dual GPU performance in this generations single GPU. Fermi is Nvidia's answer to the Radeon 58xx/59xx cards, not the GTX295. Nvidia is launching 6 months later then the 5870, it's a bit disappointing if they can't beat the 5870 handily.
 
Considering the 5850 launched at $259 and 5870 at $359, a launch price of $450 for the 5850 competitor SIX MONTHS LATER is not doing us many favors. I don't see why people would be happy about that. If it wasn't for zero competition since September of last year I'd have a 5850+8800GT or GTX470 in my machine right now! (The 8800GT to run Linux).

If we are basing this on rumors, BSN is saying that the 470 will be $299-$349 which based on the rumor benches beats the 5870 more often then it loses. Right now 5850s on the Egg are selling between $315 and $380, 5870s between $410 and $515. If rumors are to be believed, then the 470 is between $60 and $216 cheaper then the board it beats more often then not. Faster performance for $216 less may not be a favor to you, but I think most people would consider it a good deal 🙂

Of course, all of this is based on the rumors we have available at face value.

There is no A4 of Fermi 2 yet. Let's hope it's not going to take four re-spins.
 
I don't know anymore this is soo confusing. I mean really wtf has nVidia been doing for the last year and half. 295 was there last chip and now I hear Fermi will be as fast as a 295 if not a bit faster.

Also 480 shader processors ? They had told media that it would have 512, Also what really is the difference between a 470 and a 480 ? Is it just lower clock speeds or different BGA RAM maybe the 480 is 2GB memory and 470 is 1GB memory just guessin..

The 480 is almost twice the price, what do you get for that ? Comaring the 300 dollar 470 and the 480 @ 600 to 700 dollars.

Do you pay twice as much just for higher clocks, or is there different technology in each of them..

480 will be 384bit and 1536mb of ram. 470 will be 320bit and 1280mb. that has more or less be known for many months.
 
It is in the above link. 480 shaders for 480 and 448 for the 470. The 480 has 1.5GB of vram and a 384 bit bus and the 470 has 1.3GB of vram and a 320 bit bus.

That's exactly my point. At $300 the 470 sits between the 5850 and 5870 in both price and performance -- or at least it would, if it got into a time machine and went back six months. It's relative good deal now simply because prices of the 5 series have increased due to only one source being unable to cope with the high end product demand combined with etail gouging.

That, and I simply don't believe the $300 GTX470 for a moment.
