More AMD Brain Drain [BSN]

Ouch considering the name of the website.

Poor AMD, though it would be cool to see Via pick up some of these guys for Centaur and start to really try to push into Intel and AMD's business.

Edit: These guys were part of AMD's graphics division?! DAMN.

AMD has been unable to gain more than moderate traction in GPUs and CPUs for how long now? It's tough to lose good people, but maybe just maybe it's time for a different mindset for the company.

That is the positive spin version, the negative take might be the company is in serious trouble and won't be around much longer. I fear this scenario honestly.

Being graphics guys though, they are arguably the most valuable type of engineers (graphics) in AMD simply because their graphics products have remained extremely competitive, especially now that they stole some of Nvidia's GPGPU thunder and easily the most forward thinking part of APUs are the graphics arrays, and Intel gets the hint hence why both sides of the Fusion equation are exceedingly important.

Yet despite the current AMD GPU lineup being arguably superior (certainly more complete), most reviewers, end users, retails salespeople etc. recommend Nvidia. The marketshare numbers back this up. Perhaps the engineers themselves are fed up with fighting a losing battle and are moving on, I don't know can only speculate.

AMD needs to be bought out by someone with deep pockets that can pony up the coin for proper marketing. The products themselves are great, mindshare is a disaster.

Yeah, Nvidia is certainly better at marketing to consumers and getting laptop manufacturers to advertise the "benefits" of going with Nvidia.

AMD tried everything from undercutting the competitor (4850/4870/6950/6970) to launching 6 months earlier and undercutting the competitor at the same time (5850/5870) to today's generation where 7950 arguably provides amazing value with overclocking, 7970 GE has class leading performance and 7750/7770/7850 still have no competition. None of it mattered.

I think the very expensive ATI acquisition burdened the company with a large loan which turned into expensive interest payments. Cash that normally would have been used for marketing, R&D, etc. had to be used to pay down the interest on the leveraged buyout. Further, AMD rested on Athlon 64 architecture and flopped with Phenom I/II and Bulldozer was really what put the company on life support on the CPU side of things. Athlon XP/64/X2/Opteron were great chips. I think CPU sales are still 75% of their revenue. Although ATI survived without many problems as a graphics company. AMD marketing is really poor imo. I mean this generation people waited 7 months to buy a $300 GTX660Ti.....🙄

Let's be realistic here. If the roles were reversed, AMD would have been chastised for being half a year late, and bringing out a product that is merely on par or less than the competition. What is really amazing to me is how Fermi was applauded for its prowess in non gaming workloads, and of course in tessellation. All that talk has completely gone away for this generation, in fact reviewers talk about lowering settings because, well just because.

They are utterly incapable of mastering the idea of product marketing. They get their asses handed to them ever. single. time.

100%. People were upset at AMD's credibility that 7970 GE was 1 month late but 7970 GE is a 7970 refresh product. Where is the GTX680 refresh? 7970 GE ended up launching with 3 free games and at $450-470, better than the $499 MSRP and no games promised. GTX660Ti is 7 months late, not a big deal? GTX660/GTX650/Ti nowhere to be found until September/October? That's literally almost 9 months late. We are talking about tech here not car launches every 5-6 years. If AMD was 6-9 months late with its HD7000 roll-out, it'd be steamrolled in market share. NV is 6-9 months late, nothing happens -- people just save their cash until NV releases their cards and refuse to buy AMD.

Don't forget the superstar 850mhz GTX460 overclocking and beyond to reach HD5870 in some cases. HD7950 overclocking to GTX680 speeds? Not much noise on that front....double standard? 😎

It doesn't matter though because if AMD goes bankrupt, those $830+ 8800GTX Ultra prices will be back in no time. We'll see how people dance then.

They are utterly incapable of mastering the idea of product marketing. They get their asses handed to them ever. single. time.

They need more partnerships, especially for Fusion and GPGPU.

As for advertising in general, they need to market their APUs to their strengths which is performance, high-end on board graphics (-ish), media playback, content creation, mobility and cool temps in affordable computers but without sounding cheap.

And it shouldn't be anything silly. Practical advertising in their position means being professional. Intel has the name and popularity to be silly if they want. AMD not so much.

The market is what it is.
Nvidia has been hitting price performance better than AMD.
This does not make AMD GPUs lesser products. There is a very good case for AMD from the HD6670 to the 7870, possibly the 7950.
The 660 Ti is a needed contibutor to the NVIDIA line up, it is a 670 cut down with less bandwidth. The greater the resolution, the better AMD performs.

The question is what next. For whatever reasons changes are being made. Nothing remains the same. Always.

If you're talking stock price/performance, then i agree. Overclocked price and performance... disagree.

http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/4150548 $300 7950 gpu score.

AMD had better price performance for 3 consecutive generations now:

HD4850 $199 / HD4870 $299 / HD4890 $269
HD5850 $269 / HD5870 $369
HD6950 $299 / HD6970 $369

And arguably this generation too. HD7750/7770/HD7850 had no viable competition for 6 months+, 7950 dipped way under 670 for a while and 7970 GE is less than GTX680.

NV still has > 60% desktop discrete. GTX670 was a great card but it's been 3 generations of AMD leading in price/performance to no avail.

Um no, people hated the $550 price tag on the 7970 and less than amazing performance increase from 6970 (and especially the cheap unlockable 6950). AMD was first, at a horrible price. That's why a lot of people didn't buy. When GTX 680 launched a lot of people were similarly unimpressed and figured they'd just wait till the next generation or at least until prices fell for the GTX 6xx series.

I wish we could cut through all this BS and actually have some truth to what is going on with them. Are there rumors of a sale and people are jumping ship? Who knows what is going on, on the inside over there.

I mean, look at all the possible reasons for them to be where they are now. NOTICE I SAID POSSIBLE

Poor marketing
Bad Drivers
Price gouging with the 7 series
Poor Management (Look at the CEOs they had over the last decade)
Poor Business moves (the sale of their mobile cpu segment, I forgot what the name was)
Public confidence in the company may be at all time low.
Seen as bad investment?
Their stagnation on developer relations?

These are amongst a few I have heard.

No idea. All could be right or wrong.

No amount of marketing will fix their awful drivers.

Being back in the AMD camp with a 7850 has actually made me agree here.

Sure OC'ing adds instability elements, but in general from small bugs to big ones something pops up.

Does NVidia really invest that much in programming they're drivers\bios?

Even with a larger market share, you don't hear about bad drivers for Nvidia as often as you do with AMD/ATI with less cards out there overall. Both have issues and they always will. Some have more. I haven't used AMD/ATI since 5870 so I really can only go by what I read here and at other forums/articles.

Thats because most NV issues are kept to the official NV forum and going there was a eye opener.
The official AMD forum is useless so few bother posting there.
