More Advice on Fixing a TV?

I have a Philips model 27PT71B1 CRT TV that has a beautiful picture - when I can get it.

This all started over a year ago when one day I attempted to turn the TV off and it just came back on again all by itself. I fixed that problem by plugging the TV into the cable box so there was no power when the cable box was turned off. This was followed some time later by the TV volume indicator appearing on screen and then the volume reducing to zero - all by itself. I fought this for awhile by pressing the up volume control on the remote and the volume stayed up for a while before again popping up the volume indicator on screen and then reducing the volume to zero. After a lot of jigging the controls with the remote I got the volume to stay constant and only controllable through the volume control on the cable box remote.

Then the "menu screen" for color, volume, picture, etc (this TV has a multitude of available settings down to individual preferences of picture quality - remote control of DVD, CD players etc. A lot of stuff I soon grew tired of playing with) began to pop up on it;s own and the picture would disappear while the menu choices sat there and cycled through themselves. By energetic pressing of menu, source, and exit buttons on the TV remote I could get the menu screen to stop cycling but it always stays on top of whatever show I am watching. The TV can be set to present pictures from two AV devices or a DVD device, one at a time as chosen - when it cycles by itself and stops on a device that is not being used I get a blank screen. The TV from the cable box is on the AV1 connection.

To make a long story short, the nearest Philips service shop is 50 miles away - the TV weighs about 100 lbs (or close). The guys 50 miles away won't come get it and I and my wife (both with not to perfect backs) are reluctant to lug this beast downstairs, into the back of our SUV and 50 miles to the repair shop and then repeat that when it is fixed. I've determined from talking o the repair guy that the problem is an easily replaceable control module (not unlike an embedded computer). They won't give me specifics on the module are how to get it. If I could get it, wife and I could wrestle the TV to the floor and I would disassemble it and replace the module ( I've fixed TV's before back in the old days before they became so automated). The TV is fine - has a perfect picture when I can get it to hold still long enough. I hate to trash it and buy a new one because that would be a waste of a good TV that has simply lost its mind. Anybody here with a lead to buying Philips TV replacement parts? With the movement to LCD, Plasma etc. I don't know that Philips even makes CRT TV's anymore or supports 4 - to - 5 year old models.

If you do not know anything about working on CRT's, DO NOT OPEN IT UP and try to fix it as a couple of part inside contain LETHAL voltages/amperages. While it is probably just a card swap, getting the card will probably be difficult and expensive. Dont be suprised if the cost to have it fixed is as much or more than a new TV

Ask the service folks how much the repair will be if the problem is what they think it is. Might help you decide. Don't do it yourself.
