this is a different news story AFAIK, not related to the other post which i saw before posting this
Rip, even if that Heritage Foundation (they aren't biased, are they 😉 ) article is correct, it still does not address MANY of the lies that the Waxman report points out as being taught in Abstinence Education curriculum.
Also, I must admit, as long as people are pushing for a One or the Other solution, and not admitting that BOTH Absitinence and SafeSex need to be taught as realistic choices, we will make no real progress.

NOBODY, and i mean NOBODY on this board at least believes that condoms are 100% succesful. we ALL say that when you give education about condoms, you need to point to the fact that it doesn't offer 100% protection, although it does offer much greater protection than any other contraceptive when it comes to certain stds, as well as pregnancy
as i said previously though, both need to be taught

That's been my point all along: That Rip and everyone else who believes in abstinence-only education is thinking as one-dimensionally as those on the opposite side of the spectrum who don't want to mention abstinence at all. Sometimes I think "abstinence only" is evangelist code for "keep them dumb and ignorant and god help them if they actually have sex."

In the glorified Bible Belt world in which Riprorin resides, abstinence is certainly effective. However, that world ignores the fact that sexuality is a normal and healthy part of human nature, and ignores the fact that people will certainly engage in sexual activity no matter how many times you tell them that it's sinful and/or immoral. There is no doubt that condoms and other methods of STD prevention and birth control are not 100% effective. But people who are aware of these methods have that much more knowledge with which to make intelligent decisions regarding their sexuality, without having to deny human nature.

agreed....there needs to be a combination of teaching methods. Abstinence and science. Look folks, science does not necessarily contradict religion....that is always blown out of proportion. Why not teach people to have morals AND be smart...wow, what a concept! Or, you could be a fundamentalist Christian and ruin the world for the rest of us.
