Hey guys! I need some help here...

My girlfriend and I just got an apartment and we got our Internet setup yesterday. Well, check out this screenshot and let me know what you'd do.

Pay the current $50/mo for cable Internet or leech off one of these WAPs?

Mind you, I'm a very honest person, but being in college and living out on your own can make money tight sometimes.

Thanks for your input and comments!

EDIT! I'm the WAP named 'travis'.

I'd offer my services to secure their network(s).

The price would be access to their WAP.

Heh, I'd sure be tempted to just leech of the unsecured networks, but in the end I'd just pay for internet.

I wouldn't decide what is right or wrong based on whether I can get away with it or not.

I'd leech off of one. Most people don't use all of their bandwidth anyways. If they are too stupid to limit access then you should help yourself. Any questions?

Lol, this girl I know lived in an apartment and paid for DSL. Turns out last week we find out she's been using someone else's wireless internet the whole year!

They're invading your air space with free internet... so help youself.

someone paid for the service already, so you're not stealing from the phone/cable company.

if it makes you feel better, track them down and give them a couple bucks a month.

I like this idea! How would I go about finding their access point/room number? Also, what if they turn me down? Then that's one less possible WAP to leech from.

Should I just log on the network and start messaging their machine through Windows Messaging service? (netsend)

EDIT: I should mention that I'm a bandwidth whore sometimes...I'm sure they'll definitely notice me being on their network. Although, I could limit myself to heavy traffic between 2AM and 6AM. If it's free, I can't really b!tch to save $600/yr. That's over 3 car payments for me. :D

have you actually tried connecting to any? they may just have imposed a mac filter

i'd try and find the owner of the best signal/fastest connection, and offer to split the bill with them

Yes 'but' your stealing 'their' bandwidth without paying :p but they aren't 'securing' it...:p

Why is the net $50 a month? Pay for a slower service if you can.

Yes I can connect to all of them and also, $50/mo is the slowest package our local cable provider offers. (CableOne)

Post a note somewhere that you're looking to to share internet. Most of the people (college students) in my building split the cost between a couple apartments. It really cuts down the cost.

edit* I guess I should note that all of them are encrypted, so there really isn't a "stealing" option for most people.

*oops wrong button, that was supposed to be an edit...

If you don't do any filesharing or torrents or NNTP, fvck it, you're not gonna be an undue burden. But if you do happen to do any of that, I'd make an arrangement with the owner of the WAP.

I doubt if they could, seeing as they don't lock up their wireless stuff already.

excally, it's like someone threw a burger into your room, you can eat it or let it go to waste.

a secured wap is like a burger drowning in mayo, and you can't eat that.
