Yesterday I got a call from a coworker asking if I could cover his shift. Not being one to turn down a chance to help a friend, I obliged but not after I realized that I had already made an appointment to help out my mother with some tax stuff. So within 5 minutes I had called the guy back and left him a message telling him to find someone else..

Well it turns out that either he didn't get the message or didnt find someone else 'cos I had a message on my answering machine from my manager saying that no one showed up for the shift..

Am I responsible because I initially accepted the shift or is my coworker responsible because I did in fact call him back and tell him I couldn't help?

Sorry dude........ I think your on the hook for this one......... you should have called your manager when you didn't get a confirmation from your coworker. Kinda suck but thats life.

Oh, forgot to mention, my manager was THERE when the first part happened, so he said he'd call me if he needed me. He had my cell phone number too which he didn't use (and subsequently would have gotten a hold of me had he tried)

Still my fault?

In that case........ since he did not call you it's on him :D Hopefully he won't pull a he said you said and you still get the shaft :| Good luck with that.

Yep...

I know you made a prior engagement with your mom, but if you didn't get in touch with the guy you made the switch with or found another replacement, you should have shown up...

Sorry 'bout that...

Yep, since you were unable to contact the coworker to let him/her know you couldn't cover, the onus was on you to make sure someone covered the shift. Of course, if the manager was there and knew what was going on, that would put the onus on the manager to make sure it was covered, especially since he/she told you he/she would get in contact with you if needed.
