Mop with water vs. detergent soln..?

We've always been using some kind of cleaner like Pine-Sol or Mr.Clean to mop the floor, but I've questioned about it's effectiveness more than once. The instruction says You add 1/4cup to a gallon for general purpose such as mopping, full-strength for stubborn stains. When diluted for general purpose, it doesn't need rinsing. According to my math*, general purpose strength is only 1.53% and I'm not surprised it doesn't require rinsing. I'm not too sure if detergent diluted to 1.53% has any effect on mopping. Even if it doesn't have any cleaning effect one feels it's cleaner, because psychologically they think it's better, because it has to be, they added something to clean it.

Disregarding the refreshing smell, anyone seen a difference between water mopped floor vs. cleaner solution mopped floor?

quarter cup is 59ml and one gallon is 3785ml

That said,

You know, I've always thought the same thing myself. When I was a teenager working in a grocery store, we used to put in all kinds of crap in with the cleaning solution like coke, milk, etc. Not much of a difference. Water is the universal solvent after all.

it helps break up the dirt a little bit faster.

try removing a coffee stain on the counter w/water. then try w/fantastic. fantastic will save u a few seconds of extra scrubbing

I know, but that stuff is used straight. When you mop with pine-sol, you dilute 1/4cup of straight stuff into a whole gallon of water. Do you think it still holds noticeable leads over water in it's cleaning power when it's so diluted?

split the area u are mopping into 3 sections. mop 1 section w/just water. mop another w/pure pinesol. mop the 3rd w/the recommended mix. if the floor is more or less clean anyway, u probably wont notice a difference.

it's like detergent in your washing machine. if your clothes are more or less clean, washing it in plain water will get just as clean. you just wont have that fresh spring scent 🙂

they did this on a news show a few years back. the judges couldnt tell the difference between plain water and tide when washing tshirts that were worn by joggers.

obvoisly, if the clothes were used to play baseball (dirt) or fixing your car (oil/grease), then use detergent. 🙂

oh, back to your question about cleaning the floor. if the floor looks pretty clean, just use plain water to get the dust. if there's some grime, use HOT water. 🙂 and if it;s still there afterwards, use fantastic on that one spot. cheaper than buying pinesol every 4th mopping.

pure pine-sol removes tough stains pretty well.

recommended mixture/water doesn't make much difference..

did you know that toothpaste doesnt make your teeth any cleaner? its only useful for fresh breath. might as well just use mouthwash or something.

Most all toothpaste has some sort of abrasive in it for cutting through the grime on your teeth, brushing with water is good, brushing w/ toothpaste is better.
