760 lbs. dressed, 53" rack!

Really wish you'd quit shooting my family members
😉

I'll bring the  to the BBQ, SaigonK. Nice work. 😀

@BooGiMaN - As far as moose being dangerous ... let me just say this.

They can easily weigh upwards of 900 pounds.
Bull moose can have a six-foot wide antler rack.
Running speed is about 35mph.
And they really don't like being shot at.

Yeah! What he said! 🙂
The thing was taller than me (of course I am only 5' 6"). We figured it to be about 900lbs. alive...meeting it when it was pissed off would be a problem!

Thats a beauty. My grandfather took the 5th largest moose ever recorded in Montana IIRC. Mounted the head, but its too big to fit anywhere in his house, lol. I could barely bring myself to gut my first (and only, haven't really hunted the past 3 years) deer. Can't fathom how big the gut pile on that would be.

Sweet!
I made it out to the deer stand tonight and saw 2 small bucks and 2 does, i'm still waiting for the big one.... 😀

I guess as long as you're going to eat the meat.. 🙂

I wouldn't be able to shoot such a magnificent animal unless I was in survival mode though.

nice bag.

I had moose once in North Dakota. I quickly learned that i dont care for Moose meat. now Antalope, my freezer isnt big enough.

Definitely going to eat it, from this mose it will end up being about 400 lbbs of meat (give or take).
Split between 3 guys, about 170 each.

Thats allot of meat that I wont have to buy for this whole year. Figure you would have to eat a pound of meat EVERY day for 1/2 a year before it was gone...more realistaclly I have a family of four, so I will be able to not hit the local supermarket for meat for a good 11 months or so.

Citrix:

How is antelope? In comparision to moose or deer? Moose meat can be different in taste according to region and where the animal has been living,
Here it tastes awesome.
Also got a couple partridge while we were out scouting, man I love those birds. WAY better than chicken will ever be! 🙂

And in case anyone was wondering here are the nutritional values for moose meat:

A 12 ounce serving of moose meat contains the following:

456 CALS
0 CARBS
4 GRAMS OF FAT
100 GRAMS PROTEIN

Hunting it cool ONLY if you eat what you kill, Trophy hunting is WEAK and LAME.

Ummm...of course you eat it! I wouldnt hunt any other way

Good man.😀

Tanks for the vote of confidence, 🙂
I am not a trophy hunter, I dont hang deer in my house or stuff animals. What i wont eat or use, i give to someone who will.

how bout I go to your house and shoot you for fun.. then eat you.. it would be perfectly fine to kill a living creature, just as long as it is eaten afterwards and has its head mounted on the wall. As if americans dont have enough food already, you have to go out into the wild and bag a moose to feed your starving family.

I'm not some animals rights activist or anything, but I can't honestly find one thing right about going out and hunting down a perfectly innocent animal for fun.. a person would have to be pretty sick to get pleasure out of that imo

The government doesn't let people hunt just for the heck of it. Without hunting the animal population would be uncontrollable. I dont know where you live, but near me there are always deer and animals on the side of the road. Also, starvation is a very real threat to these animals. Would you rather see them killed at eaten or killed and left to rot in the woods?

Yeah but you don't feel any sympathy for the big guy? I mean, you don't eat it do you? It seems like such a wasteful and sad thing to do, in my opinion...

Why wouldn't one eat moose?

I don't know what it's like where SaigonK lives, but in Sweden, moose are primarily hunted because there are so bloody many of them, and the amount of them needs to be kept in check. The option is to leave them alone, have them procreate to unreasonable levels, and then, they "all" die because there isn't enough food for them. Don't know about you, but shooting some of them seems to be the best decision to me.

Sidenote: the amount of elks in Sweden has steadily risen during the 20:th century, due to forestry (!) (the moose likes the type of forest which regrows in clear-cut forest, which man has created many of in Sweden 😉). The elk population peaked in the late 80's, when the decision was made to shoot a whole lot of them. 😛

Right and all Americans just love chicken an beef. Every society has been hunting and killing animals FOR FOOD since the beginning of time.
And before a vegan steps up and says "well i dont eat meat...and killing it is wrong" what the heck do you think a vegetable is? Dead? It is just as alive as a cow, the only difference is that it is acceptbale to kill those things that dont seem all cute and cuddily.

And who said it was for fun? i will eat and I repeat it again so their is no confusion..E-A-T every anaimal I hunt. I do not go and shoot at anything unless I intend to bring it home.
You cant grill it until you kill it.

I fish as well, but I dont keep or kill what i wont eat, i dont mount a big old fish to satisfy my libido.

The moose population here in my home state is around 30,000 anaimals as of two years ago.
In the 1930's the count was down to 3,000 or less. By 1960 the count was only 8,000. Since then it has risen over 20,000 animals. It may seem small but imagine that means there is one moose for every 1.3 square miles in this state. At 1,000 pounds (give or take) they can eat ALLOT of foliage.

The state allows for 3,000 permits per year as of last year. This year it was cut back to 2,585 permits to see how much the population would rise.

mmmmmmmmmmmmm.........delicious!

for non hunters........unless you're vegans, dont be hypocrites, and if you're vegans, you probably dont have the strength to type

You do realize that hunters and hunting groups are some of the biggest supporters/contributers to real conservation efforts (ie. not Greenpeace), right?

Edit: Before you go off on me for defending hunters, keep in mind that I personally have never gone out hunting....I just knew/know alot of hunters.

Edit 2: Oh yeah, the original point of my post. Nice job SaigonK, should be some good eating for the next several months. 🙂

4 GRAMS OF FAT
100 GRAMS PROTEIN
Wow! On all counts..

You're going to save some big bucks on store bought meat, and it is definately going to be of higher quality.. not pumped full of hormones and garbage. You know, if I could stomach processing of the animal, I would almost consider it.

When you think about it.. you shooting the animal after it has lived wild and free is a lot more humane than locking an animal up and then mass slaughtering them....

JMO.

As for the nutrition content.. Holy sh!t?!?!??! Do those figures change for different parts of the animal? :Q Is that cooked or uncooked? Talk about lean! :Q I bet it's good meat...

Extra Lean 5% Ground Beef is as follows;

3.0oz cooked, broiled

145 Calories
6g Fat
3g Saturated Fat
65mg Cholesterol
22g protein

so.. for a 12oz serving, that would be..

580 Calories
24g fat
12g saturated fat
260g Cholesterol
88g Protein

When you move up to what most people buy, it's infinitely worse...

25% Ground Beef is as follows;

12oz serving,

944 Calories
64g Fat
6g Saturated Fat
304mg Cholesterol
88mg Protein

:Q

Congrats on the moose. 🙂

As someone who lives in Maine, I am all for the moose hunt. They are really dangerous. If you hit one with your car, you very rarely live to tell the tale.

They are so tall, with their skinny legs, they fall right on top of the vehicle.

I had a close call once.... Kill'em all as far as I'm concerned.

A fellow mainer! You work i portland? I make the commute everyday...have yet to see a moose on the highway, but there are tons of accidents each year with them.

That is for almost every part of the animal, the heart is actually even more lean and it tastes damn good. 🙂
That is the cooked stats, I imagine adding stuff to it changes that, but I think if you even added a stick of butter to it, it would still be way under cow.
