Only noobs buy mooncake at supermarket. The best mooncakes are made fresh at local chinese bakeries. Your friend probably wants a favor from you.

err best one always comes from HK or canton. my locals can't bake shit.

Every lunar festival my parents buy some and i take a bite then remember i don't like them.

The egg in the middle is really weird imo. Its really sweet and smooth then you get a bit of intensely salty dry ick.

a good quality egg shouldn't be too salty and should be moist and maybe a bit oily. the best ones are the ones that leak oil. :D

I foundout that chinese don't have savory mooncakes. Vietnamese have both sweet and savory moon cakes.

Sweet moon cakes have fillings such as Mung Bean Paste, Lotus Seed, ect.
Savory have fillings like chicken.

Probably because I am vietnamese, but I have had both red bean past moon cakes, and mung ones and I prefer mung.

there's one with pork fat and another with different kind of nuts (5-nuts, as I remember). but they are not popular.

Also the mooncake everyone is talking about these days are cantonese style, traditionally there were many northern styled ones that have wacky stuff in it and some of those looking like a pan cake. Now even people in the north buy these squarish one.

don't know much about red bean paste as lotus seed paste were considered more premium so everyone went for those. white lotus > dark lotus > red bean.

Lotus Seed Paste, huh? If there was ever something that sounded completely nasty to eat, it's that. Lotus Seed. And not just the Seed, but The Paste. *ick*

MOONPIE FTW. 932 calories each, zero nutritional value and not a better midnight munchie in the world.

Ended up buying some in Chinatown Chicago during lunchtime. Paid $0.75 each. Skipped the "Taste of Chicago", weather was just too hot outside.

I didn't know that you could eat lotus, but it's pretty good. I guess billions of Asians can't be wrong. I'm not a fan of the egg in the middle though.

Yes lotus is edible. One of my favorite dishes is a traditional vietnamese salad called Lotus Root Salad, it is made with pickled lotus root.
