Heard stuff about it, but when I found their website it made it sound like you had to pay to even get to a spot where you could see them.

I am a sorely mistaken idiot, right?

If it's anything like Vancouver's Festival of Light(IIRC), then no. The seats you pay for are only the seats with the best view and where the Music gets played Live(other places you need to use a radio for the Music). Then again, it might be totally different from Vancouver's. :shrug;

You don't have to pay. They close down the Jacques Cartier bridge to cars so that you can go on foot up there and enjoy the show. You even hear the music

You can also see them from left below the brigde(montreal side of the river). I think it's a better spot because you see them backward(mirror effect) while when you're on the bridge you see them at 45 to 90 degre angle. So it depend of what you prefer. Think of it like watching a movie at the theater. Would you prefer to see it backward(like looking into a mirror) but still in the center of the theater, or would you prefer to be sit the first row on the far right seat of the theater( from my opinion you're too close and don't see it from the right angle when you sit there).
