You would do well to remember that the pit bull has been selected my man for certain characteristics. Those characteristics make the breed dangerous.

A pit bull never nips. The damage from a pit bull bite is a horror show. They sink their teeth in and shake vigorously. The breed should not exist. The worst is that they attack without warning with NO previous signs of a problem.

I have two Pit mixes (and a little fluffy Yorkie). I've been accidentally nipped by all of my dogs while paying tug-of-war or whatever. I'm still here to tell the tale. I think my Pitbulls are defective...

i worked at a company that refused to insure anyone who owned a pitbull

from a liability standpoint they are too high a risk

When I was looking for renters insurance in Jersey when I got my dog, the landlord's required it, I found a couple of companies that wouldn't do renter's insurance for pets for pits and pit mixes. But it wasn't hard to find a major insurance provider that did - and it wasn't pricey.

I tend to support this ban, even though with my libertarian leaning I should not. I just find that most pitbull owners (not all) are types I wouldn't want to associate with that don't do the best job at proper discipline and training of their animal. The breed is more susceptible to be violent and their owners tend to be more on the neurotic side, at least 80% of them... so the 20% of them who know how to do it right won't want to go and move up there I guess.

My experience is entirely anecdotal and I only refer to my previous 6 months in San Diego...but the pitbulls at the dog parks here have been without a doubt the most "trouble" of any breed I've come across. And some or most of the owners really seem to care, including getting training. But one thing we can all agree on is every breed has its own tendencies. And I don't like the characteristics of pit bulls. They can go from cuddly to incredibly aggressive in a split second. Fuck that.

As a cat owner (and former dog owner), over the years I have had a few experiences with pits and their owners that weren't exactly pleasant. One time a neighbor's visitor brought his unleashed female pit to visit and once again (third time) the dog decided to tangle with our cat. The first two times the dog chased our cat into our garage but didn't come in after him. That was smart because my Stewie is 15 pounds of nasty-assed teeth and claws who has developed a trick if a dog is dumb enough to chase him into our garage and our car is in there.

When being chased, Stewie runs into the garage along the right side of the car, which is up against the side of the garage (less than 2 ft. of space between car and wall). If the dog is dumb enough to follow him Stewie runs under the front of the car and goes then under the car to the rear, emerging behind the dog (who is desperately trying to turn around in the tight space). Now the dog has a very pissed off cat between them and freedom. Every single time the dumb dog finally gets turned around, panics, runs and jumps over Stewie, who then unleashes every sharp tool he can on the dog. Four times (that I've seen) he's done this and every time the dog runs off yelping, Stewie in hot pursuit (out to the sidewalk, where he struts in victory), never to return.

The third time the neighbor's friend's pit came running onto our property while Stewie was in the garage lounging on top of our car. I was in the garage alongside the driver's side of the car and when I saw the dog I started to move towards it, yelling. The dog saw me, Stewie saw the dog and got up, going into full metal fluff (hair standing on end, really beautiful...lol). The dog spotted Stewie and ran towards the back of the car. Before I could do anything Stewie ran off of the back of the car and launched himself into the dog's face, latching on and all I saw was a blur as the dog was desperately shaking her head to get the cat off (which she was able to do after a second). Stewie dived just under the back of the car, turned and by that time him and the dog were getting ready to reengage at which point I kicked the dog in the side of the head. Luckily the dog backed off and the owner ran up and grabbed his dog. Once again the moron apologized and said that the dog was only playing and that she did the same thing with his Mom's cat. I told the asshole that my cat wasn't his Mom's and that I would shoot the damned dog if it came on our property again. He has never brought his dog over since (over two years now).

The dogs wouldn't be a problem if they were properly restrained but too many owners think, 'My dog isn't like that'...

the top 6 excuses given for pitbulls:

6. They were bred to be nanny dogs
5. it's the owner not the dog
4. Breed Specific Laws/bans don't work
3. It's the victim's fault
2. My dog is always gentle
1. All dogs bite

I own 2 pit bull terriers. They are both from the local animal shelter. Sweetest dogs you will ever meet. Never a growl, sneer, or bite. But- I never let my dogs off leash.
I have been bitten by several dogs in my lifetime. Shitzhu, German Shepherd, Poodle, Rottweiler & Border Collier. Where is the ban on those dogs? German Sherherds & Belgian malinois are way sketchier breeds.
Seriously- all dogs can bite.

So how are they going to certify the dog is a pitbull? Or does this cover "pitbull" breeds? Meaning any dog that looks like a pitbull? My Old English Bulldog is often times thought to be a pitbull by people who arent dog savy.
