Monthy expenses/salary for recent grad

I'm 21 and graduated college in May. I started working in my area around school (Baltimore) as a clinical research coordinator and I make ~$35k for the time being before I seek higher education (masters, med school, whatever I decide). I feel my monthly expenses are relatively low but I wanted to get a feel especially from recent grads of where they stand.

Essential Monthly Spending:
Rent - $325
Food - $250
Bills (internet, water, electric, gas) - $80
Car - none
Total: $655 (sometimes closer to $700)

After my roommate leaves next year my expenses will probably increase significantly since rent and bills are shared as of now. :/

Relocate to somewhere cheaper. 😛 FWIW, most pay around ~$700 for rent here but I was able to find a nice studio apartment big enough for two.

seriously, I hate threads like this

your rent is less than my fucking car payment!

I graduated 5 years ago about my bills are virtually the same

rent: $500 everything but TV
car: $580
cell phone: $70
TV: $70

I live in a townhouse not an apartment though.

If you want to live in an expensive area in your own apartment than its expensive

the price of renting a room in someone's house though is still pretty cheap

that is orange county

I'm sure its more in the bay area but I doubt that much more

When I graduated, i lived with my parents for a few years, but I know people who were spending close to $1k on rent. So I'd say you are doing well in that aspect; plus the fact that you have no car payment is great.

You're salary is low though; what was your major?...Psychology?

Nope, I was a chemistry major @ Hopkins though I decided not to pursue chemistry any further after graduation. My position as a clinical research coordinator is mostly for the experience and a nice break from school before attending med school

ah, I see

My rent was $600 and my income was $32k right out of college in LA 2004. I think you're in the right spot.

My sister graduated last year and she still has no paying job and neither does any of her friends from all majors (except accounting).

Dude, you're spending less than I did when I was doing my undergrad at Hopkins (03-07). It was something like $400 rent+util and maybe $300-350 for food?

Rent - $700
Food - $500
Bills (internet, water, electric, gas) - $80
Car - $250
Car insurance - $40
Health insurance - $100
Total: $1670

I make about $1750 per month after taxes. Fortunately the car payment is done in February so I should be getting by a bit more comfortably then. Graduated Dec 2008 with a liberal arts degree, once I have some more expenendable income I'll probably start taking classes at a community college in preparation for grad school (not sure what yet, economics?)

Food also includes all of my random overspending, so I shouldn't call it food. I'll call it spending money instead because it includes if I buy new clothes, gas money, etc. etc. I end up spending just under $500 a month on living

No kidding, I spend less than 125 month. Trim the fat.

Your utility bills are nice though. My electric bill alone is 150+.

How is it so high? Are you running all of Google's servers in your apartment? O_O
