? Wii - 687,000
? Nintendo DS - 536,800
? Xbox 360 - 347,200
? PSP - 238,100
? PlayStation 3 - 232,400
? PlayStation 2 - 173,500

"Hardware unit sales were flat versus last year so the decline in dollars is due to lower prices. The average retail price of hardware across all platforms declined 8% from last September," NPD analyst Anita Frazier said.

"Compared to August, nearly all hardware systems realized an increase in unit sales in September. The price reduction on the Xbox 360 helped deliver a month-over-month unit sales increase for that platform of 78%. This increase, despite the acceleration of economic turmoil during the month of September, is solid indicator of the health of the industry heading into the holiday season."

Will be interesting to see if the 360 sales will hold up through the holidays (especially with the Holiday bundles) and how Sony will respond if at all.

Force is strong with Software Sales

01. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (Xbox 360) - 610,000
02. Wii Fit (Wii) - 518,000
03. Rock Band 2 (Xbox 360) - 363,000
04. Mario Kart Wii (Wii) - 353,000
05. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (PS3) - 325,000
06. Mercenaries 2: World In Flames (Xbox 360) - 297,000
07. Wii Play (Wii) - 243,000
08. Madden NFL 09 (Xbox 360) - 224,000
09. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (Wii) - 223,000
10. Madden NFL 09 (PS2) - 158,000

NPD analyst Anita Frazier explains why software sales were down, year over year, by 6%.

"A full 35% of last year's software sales came from one title: Halo 3," Frazier noted "This year, the wealth is spread a bit more broadly as seven titles achieved sales of 250K units or more while last year only three hit that mark."

Nintendo prints money. Install base. Price drop. Wow, can't believe the PS2 is still selling! Wii play is still on the list! 360 dominates software again, guess it's because PS3 owners only use it as a Blu-ray player. The 360 is for hardcore gamers - not that softcore gamer crap the Wii has. SKU. Price point.

Enjoy thirsty Thursday, people.

The sales of SW Force Unleashed say "probably not". The 360 has twice the installed consoles in the US, and sold only twice the number of copies. So sales per installed console are the same.

Sony's PS3 consoles sold is up from last month, so it looks like the extra 360 sales didn't come from PS3 buyers, they probably were Arcade units taking sales from PS2 & Wii.

Regardless, Sony really should drop the PS3 to $349 if they want any chance of getting close to 360 sales again this year.

First off, I think your sarcasm meter is broken. Second, I wish people would quit bringing up install base every single month. I'm guessing you think there are over 120 million separate people with PS2's out there, too, don't ya?

Try $299. If it's still more expensive, what's the point?

With the way BD player prices are dropping slowly but steadily, less people will but PS3 just for BD.

In other words PS3 and 360 owners buy shitty games at the same rate. 🙂

Oblivious to the drinking game

You're also notorious for dropping the "install-base" bomb. For that, nerdy alcoholics everywhere rejoice.

lol ... greatest post in an NPD thread ever!

Hmmm, we have been hearing for a while now that the Wii sells to well because it is the cheapest console, it really looks increasingly clear that that is very much not the case. Not so much because now it is throttling the cheaper 360, more due to the games it has that are selling. While it seems they are going after a very different market then Sony or MS, it seems that that market is quite a bit larger then anyone would have expected. To surrender the hardcore gamer market without so much as the slightest bit of a fight and still utterly crush the competition is a bit surprising.

Long term this could bode very well for console gaming. If MS and Sony are still fighting it out for the hardcore gamer, it looks like the overall market for consoles should see a fairly staggering increase by the end of this generation.

Does it even matter anymore? The battle is over and they're just scrounging for scraps (and gamers like me considering Blu-Ray who might take a PS3 over a standalone). Even if MS decided to stop manufacturing 360s tomorrow it would probably take until next gen for the PS3 to make enough headway to make publishers notice.

Who the hell's buying those Wii systems?! Every time a pallet show up at Costco they disappear by the end of the day or day 2 at best.

People like my parents. Mid-50s with too much money and they think Wii Fit looks neat, except they can't find a copy of it...

Hehehe, I guess so. I didnt get SW:Crap Unleashed. The demo was enough crap for me.

I had given kudos to Nintendo on a job well done with the Wii, but really, at this point, who the hell are buying Wiis? I stopped playing mine months and months ago. My son barely even plays with it. So who the hell are buying these? Methinks lots of bars and social clubs are buying these and re-buying as some drunken a-holes are smashing em up.

LMFAO!

It's kinda scary how accurate the original drinking game post was. I feel drunk just thinking about it.
