MONSTER system, is a E6600 enough?

Hello all

I just built a new rig with a ASUS Striker mobo, 2 WD 150gb raptors in raid 0, 2 8800 GTX's in SLI, and 2gb of Dominator Corsair RAM at DDR2 1066.

the CPU for the system I got was the E6600 and now im left wondering ... did i get a CPU thats too weak to show the full potential of my system? Basically im wondering if i should sell my E6600 and get a E6700 or if i should go 6800 or what. OR, should i just OC the E6600 to 3.0 GHZ which i can do with full stability and still reasonable temps .... I just am not sure what to do

Any advice/comments appreciated.

Depends if you are rich as hell or not :) I'd say o'c the 6600 to 3.2-3.4 ghz. Clock for clock its as fast as x6800 (same 4mb cache/same proc)

You choice in CPU's is a good choice. You can easily OC that to 3.0GHz, so you won't have any bottlenecks. Keep the E6600. You are just having buyer's remorse, but it was a good choice.

no offense but ... that's a killer system !

i guess the 6700 is about $200 more than the 6600 ?

the problem is, the 6600 you have now might OC better than the 6700 you might buy.

what Heat Sink - Fan are you using ?

Ya the infinity fit on just fine, it only fits in one way but thankfully its the correct way so ... it worked out. You have to play with it a bit otherwise it interferes with some of the power caps and other do-dads but yes, there is 1 position that it fits on and mounts no problem and that is the correct way so. no worries

[edit] not rich just saved =P ya quadcore intel style hasnt proven itself to me yet ... dual core at the moment is better for programs and intels quad cores arent native, just 2 dual cores sandwiched into 1 package. Maybe when they have native quad cores in 2007 ill check it out =P

Awesome rig, I'd say you'll be fine with the E6600, especially if you're OCing. I'm really starting to wonder where this myth of Intel's quad core implementation being inferior somehow has come from though... testing has show that "native" and "glued" means nothing for performance. Oh well, guess the FUD machine worked this time! Anyway, stellar rig, enjoy it!

Even a single 8800GTX is cpu-bound, with an X6800, so with two of them, you'd be cpu-bound even if you ran your E6600 at 4 Ghz.

cool can i get some pics of that ? :p cause im getting this mobo soon and need to know if i have to go for some water cooling or just stay with my scythe at 3.2 ghz XD.

#1 I think your CPU choice is fine
#2 if you dropped a load on all the other components, what held you back intially on the CPU. It's like buying a new Porsche and getting the smaller engine.

unless your lcd hdtv is 1920x1080 (although most of the 40" units i have seen are 1366x768) you are resolution bound and are not stretching the legs of your rig. with that setup you need to be running it at 1920x1080 or higher since you have both the cpu and gpu power to do it.

My LCD TV is a nice Samsung i think ... LD4095 or something and has 1920x1080, its nice =P

As for what initially held me back ... Well CPUs I think are a bit strange. In a graphics card if u buy the GTX ove the GTS or the GT or what ever, the hundred extra bucks or so (or what ever price boost) usually shows a good amount of value and improvement ... A good example is say a 7900 GT vs a GTX, its a price difference but a significant change in performance.

CPU's ive always been skeptical about because since one can OC i really dont see the value in buying the standard 2.9 GHZ EX6800 over the E6600 ... Same specs really just a higher clock speed. Now, for that seemingly small difference the price gap between a E6600 and a EX6800is like .... 600 dollars ... that hardly seems worth it

So, in my opinion, why ACTUALLY buy that insane CPU if the E6600 OCs so well anyways and is basically the same CPU just slower? I kno there are unlocked clock speeds etc but shrug, still, ive only heard good things about the E6600 and even tho i dropped a small fortune on this rig, i do like to save money where i can :)

As for the analogy of a Ferrari or something with a weaker engine ... in a gaming rig id rate the GPU as the engine and the CPU more as like ... shrug the trani lol =P

Nice system you got there. I hope you'll enjoy it.
The CPU is very important. Using your analogy, drive a Ferrari with a Jetta tranny and you'll see what I mean. Let aside a regular road car loses 10-15% of it's total power in the transmission. The better the tranny, the better the ride.
Anyways, 6600 is good and you're not CPU bound unless you play no AA/AF. If you have a good framerate and you think the CPU is the bottleneck, you can always up the AA/AF until you balance the situation.
I play Oblivion at 1680x1050 (max in game settings) with 16xAA 16xAF, ssAA, Gamma corrected and all optimisations off. The CPU is still bottlenecking the thing, but at least i have a minimum 40FPS outdoors and indoors i reach 300+.
BTW, my CPU is running stock speed, 2.93

Hrmm ... Also another question ... As far as a 40" TV as a moniter, should the resolution of 1920x1080 make that much of a difference over the next step down of 1380x720? Just curious as if so, ill return this 40 inch one for a 500 dollar cheaper model. thanks guys.

the higher the resolution in games the more detail. when i bought my 40" lcd i picked up a 1366x768 panel due to my gpu limitations, but since you already have 2x8800gtx the 1920x1080 panel is what you need, otherwise you could more than likely get away with a single 8800gtx, i think even in oblvion. that part is up to you. also, if you use the machine for anything, sometimes the extra screen real estate is needed. i know i currently have a 1280x1024 17" lcd for my main monitor, and am definately looking to pick up another one as many times in go live, illustrator or photoshop i could use the extra real estate, but don't need it for gaming because 1280x1024 is good for me and my frugal ways ;)
