Link doesn't work for me either.

Will this one also have 450 watts worth of power connectors and a triple slot cooler? :D

Why don't they just put a connector on it so you can plug it into the wall? :p

Ahhh the Voodoo5 6000 jokes about power! Brings back memories of 2000...

Some pics from a friend of mine who used to really go on about the state of video cards drawing power. These pics and captions were his. :D

Voodoo5 6000 ready case!

power4.jpg

Because of the power consumption, to assure reliable computer operation its own battery backup (inside) was designed from the ground up! Hence the stable V56k platform!

power3.jpg

Dedicated generator room to power the setup since home power supplies from the utility grid are insufficient!

power2.jpg

Testing the transformer using the arc method!

power1.jpg

How to tell if someone has a Voodoo 5 6000 in their house - without out all the necessary power modifications above:

And people worry about cell phone radiation!

Ignoring all the spammy pictures, here's a relevant one:
asus_7800gt_dual.jpg

Yes, a dual GPU card. From Asus. With an external power hookup.
2x7800GT in this case, so it probably didn't need it, but...

Today's PSUs are much more GPU oriented.

That said if they keep up the cards are going to have a power connector the size of an ATX motherboard connector!

Yea, I think I read 3 power connectors.

Ummm.........not for a dual Fermi chipped card you didn't. That article was almost entirely about the dual 5970 card. The only part that was about the dual Fermi card, if one ever arrives, was this comment by Asus:

"Will Asus make one?"

Asus: "Hopefully. They [we take this refers to ASUS Engineering team] didn't got farther than engineering drawings."

That was about it for a dual Fermi card..........

The hi limit for PCIE card power is 300W. At this stage NVIDIA/Asus can't do it with fermi without violating the POWER specification for PCIE card.

IIRC the limit for power delivery via the PCI-E slot is 75 watts, and another 225W comes from the 6-pin/8-pin connectors directly to the power supply. if additional power is required for the card I don't see why they can't add more 6-pin/8-pin sockets, provided the board itself can handle the heat and power.

"IF ROG HD5970 Ares is anything to go by, we shouldn't be surprised to either see a repeat of Ares'es power configuration with two 8-pin and one 6-pin PEG connector, or we might even see a triple or quad 8-Pin connectors on a single PCB"

Yes they can use more then 300 watts

PCIE certification of any hardware (graphics or whatsoever) specifies a limit of 300W of power. Its not a question of available power but compliance to DEFINED STANDARD.

The PCIE standard/specifications is on the path below:

http://www.pcisig.com/specifications/pciexpress

Refer to the articel below on the challenges facing Fermi including power.

http://www.semiaccurate.com/2010/02/17/nvidias-fermigtx480-broken-and-unfixable/

Been through this a million times.

Yes pci-e standard is 300 watts.
It does NOT mean you have to stick to it.

Asus makes these cards out of spec.

The Asus 5970 uses 2 8 pins and a 6 pin. How many watts is that? 450?

Edit : its almost a garuntee that there will be a dual fermi and it will be faster then the 5970.

correct...who is going to stop them from selling them? Now, there was a big hubub about the 5970 and the 300w "limit." I think that was all in reference to the ATi reference 5970, which is why it came underclocked, etc. but board makers can basically do whatever the hell they want, to the point where it costs them sales.

Read the article and the specifications. Then you will understand why Nvidia / Asus need PCIE certification on their product/s. It would be a field day for the lawyers once such product from NVIDIA/Asus comes out without official PCIE PCI/SIG certifications.

OEMs and companies like DELL, HP, ACER etc who are members of the PCI/SIG group won't use product with PCIE certification.

Dual Fermi can happen on the next process technology not on the 40nm.

Nobody will stop Nvidia/Asus from making product that is NON-Compliant but Members of PCI/SIG group(PC Makers, OEMS, Chip makers) won't endorse the product.

Wrong again. They will have a dual fermi card on the 40nm process.
A gtx 480 uses 225 watts, with a little tweaking they will fit another chip on the same PCB under 300 watts.

Remember a gtx 295 uses 2 gtx 275's at 180 watts each. Thats 360 watts.
The gtx 295 uses 280 watts?

They did it with the dual gtx 285 also. 289 watts.
