Mono question... Can someone who already had mono get sick from it again?

Mono is in incubation for up to a year after the person gets over the sickness. If you have caught it you normally won't show symptoms for 4-7 weeks. After that its about 1 week (if you're lucky) to 4 weeks of extreme sickness. If you've had mono once you can't get it again.

Im just worried because my new girlfriend (of about a month and a half) had mono in Jan. A week ago yesterday, tonsils swelled up and my throat got REALLY sore, and i had a fever for 3 days. My doctor diagnosed it as Strep (without giving me the strep test) and put me on antibiotics and gave me a few shots. Well, a week later my throat is still a little sore and my tonsils are still swollen.

Im just wondering if it could be mono.

Many medical specialists say that it is not uncommon for doctors to misdiagnose mono as strep type-A. I agree with them because that happened to me. It is entirely possible that you contracted mono from your girlfriend and I would reccommend going back to your doctor and explaining the situation.

Welp a little update... My doctor is 90% sure its mono, hes running my bloodwork just to check...

Another interesting thing though... When i was talking to my girlfriend later tonight, she said she had it FRESHMAN year over 2 years ago, not 6 months ago like i thought. She had it pretty bad and now isnt feeling too good tonight.

Is it possible to get a relapse of mono if shes already had it?

Mononucleosis (Epstien-Barr) is a virus. Taking antibiotics won't do anything for you.

Yes, it is possible to contract mono twice. But it's pretty rare.

Not exactly correct. Antibiotics will not cure the E-B virus, but it can prevent secondary infections common with people who have mono. The E-B virus attacks the T cells (white blood cells), and without them your immune system is basically a wide open door for any bacteria that want to invade. Because I was misdiagnosed twice while I had mono, when finally properly diagnosed my T cell count was so low that my doctor prescribed heavy antibiotics and steroids while my immune system recovered. Any serious infection and I could have died, according to my doctor.

Ding ding ding! And that secondary infection that most people get while under the effects of mono is a bacterial throat infection that a normal immune system can fight off in it's sleep. And, guess what: It presents just like Strep. It's what I got sick with. Couldn't drink or eat for a week. Only way I wasn't hospitalized was that on day 3, the ER gave me a shot of steroids that cleared the infection from my throat for a day, so I could eat drink and be merry. :)

Thats what i had last week. They thought it was a bad case of strep, gave me shots of steriods and pen., and put me on 7 day antibiotics. The sore throat went away, but my tonsils are still the size of texas.
