Some people get it really bad - I was actually sick (fever etc.) for 8 days and very weak (slept 12-14 hours per day, not by choice) for three or four more weeks. I don't think I truly recovered for six months. Then again, some people get right through it. Many people test positive for the antibodies, i.e. their immune systems have fought it off, yet cannot recall ever having it. (In these cases it was most likely mistaken for flu, since both are viral infections with some common symptoms.)
The bad part is that you stay contagious for a while after you've broken the initial illness. I was told not to "exchange saliva" (they made it sound so romantic) for a month after I was finally diagnosed. The 30th day happened to be prom weekend. We chanced it.
Take care, listen to your doctors even if they don't tell you what you want to hear, and I hope you feel better soon.
