with all me looking for an AG tube, I have kinda left the shadow mask behind and not really kept up.. anyone care to throw out some good ones, both flat and not.
 
One can say one is better and sharper than other.
Although I have AG monitor (iiyama vision master pro 501), I really can't tell much different from a "good" Shadow mask...🙂

Anyhow.....here is direct link to explain the difference between these two.

BTW, iiyama make really crisp monitor. (a quiet company) Wife's company recently order 15 of its S900, which has amazing clearity.
 
What size? 19" or 21"?

i know the differences.. i was looking for more for hardware.. what LXi gave.

I remember sizing up a IFT vs some AG viewsonic but the brightness in the viewsonic just pushed the IFT off the shelf (then again, this is a best buy display.. and welll... you get the point).


What about non-flat (cost reasons for a friend)?
 
Well brightness is one of AG's primary strengths, the IFTs(DynaFlat) are some of the brightest shadow masks out there right now, still not on par with AGs though.

Why bother with non-flats? If you have to get a non-flat, I guess it still belongs to Hitachi and Samsung, they make monitors with the smallest dot pitch.

The Hitachi 21" line is still round, excellent shadow masks.
 
The F980 21" Eizo shadow mask monitor has won every award there is. It is simply the best. Open up your check book and be ready to pay the big bucks. I have a 7 or 8 year old Eizo/Nanao 17" monitor that you can read one point type in the corners and is just as bright and sharp as the day I bought it for $1200.
 
um... i think he was asking about a SM tech based monitor... someone in korea hinted me LG is about to relase the 19'' version of their highly acclaimed Flatron line. personally i cant deny i was quite impressed by its image quality.

Well, the reason i was asking about non-flats was cost.. i haven't look at it yet, but I was guessing flat would be a slight more expensive. And it's for a friend who's gotta tight budget.
 
goldstar is the old name they dropped back in 92', i belive. i should also mention judging products by a company's past track record isnt fair. thats like saying ati will never have a real 3d card. LG have really gotten their acts together; their monitors dominate samsung in korea (where both of them are based), LG CDRW are highly rated. for those who are in the know, LG ram is right up their with samsung and micron. dont be fooled by viewsonic zealots, a monitor purchase is a rather big investment. hope you spend your hard earned mulah wisely 🙂
 
I guess it isn't fair, but I really have not seen any of those monitors. Maybe I need to make a run into best buy one of these days.

Anyway, i was looking at the Samsung DF series.. seems to be the IFT replacements.
 
DF is NOT flat btw. in the korean market, samsung was handed a big smackdown by LG flatrons when they claimed DFs are more 'naturally' flat compared to flatrons. DFs are pretty nice monitors, but to compare them to flatrons is an apple to orange comparison. flatrons are SM tech but they match brightness and smoothness of AG like no other SM.
 
Wait, why is the DF description seem as tho it's a flat monitor? Are you talking specifically about the tube? Have any review links for the LG?
 
The DF series has a slightly curved tube with a flat piece of glass over it. So it looks flat until you actually see the picture, it is SLIGHTLY curved but still a great monitor.
 
yeah, i knew that.. but the LG monitors are actaully a flat shadow mask tube? That's interesting.. never knew that.


Wait, are the LG Flatrons SM tubes????? It doesn't seem like it by the pricing.. and the name.

You talk like an LG zealot and a Samsung hater. Get this, who the f cares if the DFs are slightly curved inside? I have seen them and they look just as good if not better than other flats. Samsung claimed the curvature inside actually produces finer image, I agree with that, I didnt see any geometry problems, and the tube is much brighter than conventional shadow masks. We can careless about whatever the hell happened in Korea, if LGs dont make themselves available here, there is no way we can even find them, plus, there are no 19" models. And also, dont expect the Flatrons to be any cheaper than the luxury brands such as Sony and Mitsubishi, they're LG's flagship monitor. If the Flatrons are just a bunch of AG-wannabes, I much rather go for a real AG, or stay with DynaFlat or ErgoFlat to get the true SM look. Hitachi's ErgoFlat by the way, is done the same way as DynaFlat.

no, i am not a samsung hater. i said DFs are still good if you would care to reread my post 🙂 samsungs are awesome moniotors and the 900nf rocks, but lnguyen asked about SM monitors in particular, and if the Flatron classifies as a SM product then it is superior to DF IMO; flastron is more comparable to 900NF. not sure what the going price for flatrons are in the states, in korea flatrons and DFs had about the same price tag on them. LGs traditionally have stayed on more economical side, thus i dont expect anything outrageously expensive like sony.

have actually seen a Flatron? to me it looked as if it was a AG monitor without those damper lines. personally i could care less about them; however you do remember there was a thread on that and about a fraction of people said they are really ticked by them, so flatrons would be the ones to get for damper line haters. all i was tryin to say by bringin up that fiasco was if they were priced about the same, there is gotta be a reason for the market domination (for flatrons that is)
 
hehe calm down LXi, i dont even own a LG monitor right now(gave my studioworks to my sis)... it just ticks me off when people dis LG stuff becauze of their bad rep from the goldstar days...

wow, they do have their 19'' model on their site! 1600 x 1200 @ 85 Hz and BNC looks sweet... i have no clue why the hell they are not so avaialble in the states!
 
Why do you dislike the DynaFlats? I do not classify the Flatrons as true SMs or true AGs. If you want true SM look DynaFlat/ErgoFlat would be the best, as for people who like AG, go with real AG. Like you said, there are damper wire haters, but those are the ones who tend to prefer SM. And the curvature, yes, I have seen both LG and DF, did not notice any curvature and the picture quality of the DF does seem more realistic, Im not talking about the tech itself here, Im talking about real world performance. You can say as much as you want about how bad the DFs are technically, but they look real nice in real world. I will not hesitate to recommend DF or EF to people who like SM.

That 19&quot; is a preview, I saw that months ago. I wish they just remove that &quot;preview&quot; sign and get their sh1t to the US market.

point taken, i just saw it the other way round. in my posts i didnt imply DFs are bad, just that Flatrons could be a better pick since i am yet to hear any complaints about flatrons.

I fully understand. Your posts focus more on the technical side of the stuff, I dont disagree the Flatrons beats DFs hands down technically. But in real world, it depends on what you like, just like SM vs AG, now there is a 3rd type of tube, we'll make it SM vs AG vs FT.

The curvatures, while present, but the picture quality did not suffer any distortion, I just want to make that clear.
