Monitors keep blowing up

Hello all,

As the title says, I've had a recurring problem with monitors dying. They both ended up displaying a horizontal white-ish colored band about 1/16" across the screen, making them unusable. After the first one died I replaced the videocard, but it has happened again.

The computer is an old P3-based celeron 600 running on an SIS chipset motherboard. The PSU is generic. The videocard is a Radeon 7000, but I doubt it's the cause of the problem.

Any ideas as to the cause? Electrical problems in the house maybe? This house was built in the 60's.

Anyone? What does it mean if there is a single horizontal band of light running across the screen, but the rest is black?

It means that you have been chosen to enter the "next realm" of existance. Or perhaps you have a poltergeist living in your computer. One of the two. :p

Are they identical monitors, i.e. bought at the same time, same manufacturer/model? Could be a bad batch? If not, maybe you are getting too much juice although not enough to blow the fuse... Had any big storms recently? Are you pushing the monitors to the limit of refresh/resolution? Just throwing some ideas out here.

Got a lot of hits off Google, varying causes...

That's a great idea; I'll look into it. :)

It sounds like you've been playing too much Doom 3 in a dark room. :cookie:
