Monitors... grrr...

Monitors annoy me. They annoy me a lot.

I'll be getting a new comp come xmas (sig), but because of my resonably tight budget ($2200NZ) I'm having to cut back in the monitor department. I'm looking at a $200NZ 17" CRT ? *waits for the groan of pain*

Monitors these days frankly cost too much. You just can't get a good, cheap LCD.

So my question is, can you, for no more than $250-300NZ, get a monitor better than a 17" CRT.

BTW whats the best, cheap, CRT at the moment? It's hard to find CRT reviews these days.

I own a Samsung 997DF as of now, I purchased it at circuit city for 200 USD or 290NZ. It's 19 inch but since it's within your price I thought I'd post. Nothing but good things going for it.

For a "cheap" monitor, I'd get a grade-A refurb 21"-22" CRT based on a trinitron tube and related technologies.

For $200 or $250 US you can get a great CRT shipped over here. I don't know about your situation though.

A currency calculator tells me that $200NZ = 137.339 USD

$200NZ is my ideal price, and may be my necessary price.

You should probably factor in the electricity you save with an LCD monitor. They often use almost half the energy of a similiarly sized CRT.

Erm I don't pay for power!

Guess I'll have to factor that in when I'm older...

LOL, when I went from a 19" Dell Trinitron to my current Princeton 17" LCD, my power draw was cut almost 100 watts, according to my UPS.

One drawback is that the room is on the corner of the house, and without that monitor adding to the heat in there, it's getting cold enough to bother me now. It used to be nice unless I had all my stuff going, then it was miserable in the winter, and even worse in the summer. Well, I have to run the heat up, or run more of my many radios to get it warm enough without making the rest of the house too hot.

I can't win.

I picked up a Dell 19" Trinitrion P990 for about $50US. Its still rocking after 2 years of service. Im presently using a 17" 16ms LCD, but Id prefer the CRT if space wasnt an issue.

Newegg is offering a 15" widescreen LCD for 160 bucks, mines came with 1 dead pixel, but it doesn't bother me much.

the Dell Ultrasharp 17" LCD is the best I've seen, quality and performance with DVI

you're probably asking for an analog display with your budget? a cheaper 19" LCD is the way to go, but I'd rather stick with a 17" LCD. CRT's today are like running tape players. Play it smart and save energy and desktop space, go LCD.

I don't know how plentyful shows are down uner (or close to it 😉) but I would consider checking som used Puter places or even check with the school as to what they do with their CRT's as many are replacing them with LCD if you find any try and make sure they come from either the Lab or Sports Dept 😛

God my school computers are a nightmare!

One computer lab has decent comps, but the others are sooo bad it's funny. We got Marathon Infinity running on 'em though 😛

They say the mobos are crapping out on them, and that the company says it will cost about a thousand to replace each one. I told them they could buy a very good work computer for that, and not to get ripped off.

=> Where do you get "refurbed monitors"? They sound decent, but I'm not sure where to look.

EDIT: Google's my friend 🙂 I take it you get them from dealers who refurbish hardware and resell at low price.. At least that's what I found. Sounds very possible, I'll definitely look into that.
