Monitoring packets

There are several people on the wireless network I control. I want to keep most ports enabled constantly, but be able to tell if someone is constantly downloading from certain ports.

I recently heard of a program called Ethereal. Does anyone know if this app is able to monitor what packets are going where?

If not, what might a useful tool be?

The network is using a regular D-Link 802.11b/g router.

Yes ethereal is a packet sniffer that you would have to set somewhere between your WAP and your Router and make sure it's on a management port if it's on a switch. If this is a wireless access point router combo thing, then probably not.

reading/understanding what Ethereal is seeing is black art unto itself. You usually need to have a very good understanding of L2/3/4, and heavy filtering/saving adn then later analysis. It will also fill your HDD quick 🙂
