Monitoring fan RPM with 4 pin adapter

Is there any way to monitor the fan RPM if you use a 3 to 4 pin adapter. I was thinking that if you ran the RPM monitoring wire and wire from the ground to the proper pins on the motherboard you could monitor the RPM through the BIOS. Would this work? I do not see any need for the postive 12V connector to monitor just the RPM.

Yes, that will indeed work, that's how most people who use Baybuses or Fanbuses get monitoring on their fans.
