Monitor Warranty: To purchase or not?

I finally just snagged a PG278Q from B&H, and as an impulse purchase, added a $90 SquareTrade 3 year extended warranty. (Asus warranty = 1 year).

While it's a big purchase for me (the monitor was $799), I'm now wondering if I made a mistake.

Anyone here do the same in my shoes? Or is this added warranty er, unwarranted?

Anyone ever purchased a warranty for a monitor, and were glad they did?

Cheers.

With that monitor and the issues (hearsay on forums) I would definitely consider the extended warranty. It's not a huge cost and the monitor is very expensive. I don't think you made a mistake with that.

Would you ride a motorcycle without a helmet?

The warranty is a way to purchase peace of mind, a safety net so you don't have to worry.

I have never seen an extended warranty that was worth the money. A good rule of thumb is that if you can't afford to replace it, you can't afford to buy it. Yes, this means accepting a little extra risk, but you come out ahead in the long term.

Well I can't tell you how many times a warranty has saved me lots of money but if the monitor is problematic then it's in your best interest to keep the warranty. Personally I buy dell for their 3 year warranty and their pixel replacement policy.

Based on my experience, I think one year is not sufficient for ANY monitor, let alone an expensive one. I just RMA'd a Viewsonic IPS LED unit that was two years into its three year warranty. I'm temporarily using an inexpensive Acer model that's three years past its one year warranty, but it wasn't used as heavily. LCD parts wear out, often unpredictably. You were wise to go with the extended in this case, especially since there's no track record for G-Sync monitors.

One of my older monitors just died a slow death. First it started flickering and not wanting to turn on, although once it did it stayed on until it was shut off again. Now it doesn't even flicker or show any light on the screen. I've been debating if it's worth opening it up but am not that motivated since it's not worth anything.

If $800 is a lot of money to you, $90 is probably worth peace of mind.

Laptops are one purchase which I am wary of since a few have died over time, a couple due to NV''s bumpgate. Most PC hardware has ~3 years and has generally been fine.
