Monitor viewing distance

Have heard people say that a monitor cannot be too big, but I disagree, since you will likely get a neck strain if you sit too close.

Looking for a formula (or table) that gives the max/min distance for viewing monitors of different sizes at different resolutions.
 
Depends more on whether you sit (in your normal position) level with the screen or not. When I lean back in my chair at home my monitor is just slightly raised which works perfectly for me. 27" looks great from 3' away, very immersive for gaming & movies.
 
720p or 1080p?

720p you're going to have to be at least 6ft away or more just to tolerate the large font. 1080p will look much better, you could probably use it just like I use my 27" Dell (2-4ft depending on whether I'm reclining or not).
