Monitor Trouble

My likon 17in monitor has been getting progressively worser with this problem in the last months.

At random times it will just emit a high pitches screech, sometimes suddenly stopping. I have also noticed that it may stop when playing certain games, probably at a different resolution than the desktop res.

I have tried setting different refresh rates, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Is there anything else to try besides buy a new monitor?
 
i have a 19in monitor that does the same. don't know the cause but i've only gotten it when i ran it at 640x480. don't get anything at my usual res of 1600x1200. haven't really tried anything in between.
 
Any other suggestions, cos i have the desktop resolution set to be optimal for the monitor size and i don't want to change it.
