Monitor temperature on 9800 Pro?

My computer is rebooting randomly since a few weeks. Sometimes it's twice a day, sometimes it's once a week.

I'm pretty sure it's either that 1) my 9800 runs too hot, 2) my antec 350w power supply can't handle the load... although I haven't gamed in a month, or 3) my OCZ decided to break (i just pumped up my voltage to 2.7v in case my timings were too agressive).

but it never did this before i got my 9800 pro, two months ago... so I'm gonna try to investigate this first... is there a program that will show me the temperature of my video card?

? Are you seeing ANY artifacting? ? That is more indicative of the 9800p affected (itself) by heat.

You might try cooling your case better . . . . 9800p/xt runs up tp 80 C and will definitely raise your case temps - it might be affecting your O/C (try backing it down further). .

When you are out of warranty, you might consider an Arctic Cooling Silencer 3 vga cooler - it's use of an extra (pci slot1) slot exhausts the hot GPU air out of your case.

Well actually when I think about it, I don't think it's the heat. I have an Antec case and while I haven't done any modification do it, I don't overclock so there's no reason why it should run too hot.

My guess is that it's the power supply that can't handle the load... I haven't had the time to seriously game since I got my 9800 Pro, so I can't tell if the PS can handle the heavier load.

If it can be of any help, when I restart the computer, I get a BIOS checksum error and it looks for the floppy. I power it down and back up and everything's fine, except for the fact that it forces me to go check the BIOS settings on the first reboot. And when I get back in Windows, my refresh rate on my primary monitor is not at 85Hz where it should be. This makes me believe it's the PS that's too weak (350W Antec).

When I get in Windows, it also tells me that the system has recovered from a serious error and the error signature is "BCCode : 1000008e BCP1 : C0000005 BCP2 : 805DCE76 BCP3 : F6E50ADC
BCP4 : 00000000 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 2_0 Product : 256_1". Dunno if that helps either.

When I set it not to reboot, I got two blue screens, one with 0x0000007F and one with 0x0000008E... I'm gonna look those up on Google.

IF it's not heat, i really (really) [no - really!] DOUBT that is is your PS (unless you are running tons of other crap).

300w generic is usually sufficient for a 9800p

Since your problems started with its install, i'd look elsewhere (than the PS).

What DRIVERS are you using? (tried several?)

Crashes happen in ALL games?

What card did you upgrade from? did you use Driver Cleaner?

Is you mb's BIOS up-to-date; MB drivers installed?

I updated my BIOS last week.

And it's not crashing when I play a game... it's crashing when just browsing the net!!

use atitool. it will tell temps of videocard. did you update to the latest chipset drivers?

Now the F thing won't even boot. When I opened my case and gave it power, I found that the 9800's fan wasn't even spinning. Hmm.

I reseated it and re-powered everything, and now the fan spins but it still doesn't load. I F hope I didn't fry my card because I bought it this summer becase my GF3 was dead.

If you suspect it is your video card then either try it in another system or try another video card in yours. Does the bios give u any post beeps or anything of the sort if u took the video card out or does it just not boot at all now? Id check into the cooling of other components also. Is anything overclocked? whats your cpu temp in bios (if u can get in there)?

Yah I'm going to a dinner over to my friend's place in a few minutes and I'm gonna bring the card with me I think.

The only thing it does is give power to the components. Nothing appears on screen, no beeps, no nothing.

I removed the 9800 Pro, and I popped in my dead GF3 (I did that without any logic behind this move). This time, the power came on and off right away. I couldn't get the power to stay on. So I removed the GF3 and placed back the 9800. Same thing. Sh!it.

I decided to clear the CMOS and it rebooted right away. I'm in Windows right now. I hope that was the problem. Remember the BIOS checksum error I had from my previous post.. maybe my BIOS had became corrupted or something.

Yeah, a bios reset was a good move. I recommend you download motherboard monitor and check your system's temperatures and voltages. The cause of the reset could be that the cpu gets too hot, and the 9800P does put out some heat. Make sure all the fans are running too. Voltage's should be near their optimal level also, +/- 10% for the 3.3v and 5v rails and +/- .3v for the 12v rail. Peace.

Thanks. I actually went on MBM's site today and found out it wasn't being developped anymore. I thought I'd look for an alternative later, but I guess it's still widely used.

It reports my case temp as 27C, CPU socket as 47C and CPU diode as 54C. Is it alarming? Is there another program like MBM to monitor my vid card?

It's a Athlon XP 2500+.. the exact configuration of my comp is in my sig.

Temps look fine, what about the voltage readings? I think you should try the 9800P in another system, put a good video card in your system, and see if another power supply clears the problem up. Prime95's torture test and Memtest86, cache always on and all test, are a couple diagnostic programs to see if your memory and cpu are stable.

They measure the voltage that is going to the cpu. Overall, they all look ok. Could be better, but not bad.

Well the clear CMOS seems to have fixed the problem. The computer still haven't crashed in two days.

I have had a similar experience with the rebooting issue you have described, and I would be very careful of the temperatures & voltages. A poor-quality power supply fried on me once without my knowledge. Just shut down and wouldn't boot back up, but would power up fans. While I was trying to diagnose, I didn't know the 5v had fried, but 12 had not. 12v decided to fuse with the 5v lead within a couple restart tries, and fried my mobo and actually had smoke coming out of a cd rom. I would imagine you would see elevated temperatures and fluctuating voltages before something like that happens, but I wasn't watching those when this problem happened, so I can't tell you for sure.

Well regarding the low quality power supply, since it's an Antec PS, I believe it's should not cause any problem. I'm not saying it's not going to die, but I don't think Antec is considered "cheap".

Since I cleared my CMOS, 8 days ago, my computer has not crashed, so I hope that was the only problem.

This symptom is something I've suffered with for 2 years now since I went for the 9700Pro as it 1st came out. Built a new system based on Granite Bay mobo, which was supposed to be the most stable ever at the time and crash bang wollop. Especially when starting IE. just for the record, now on a 9800pro as I blew my 9700pro card up 2 weeks ago, never believed the static bit until then .... DOH. Refused point blank to get a £350 card again($500) as just replaced it 2 years later for a third that price.

Righto, how to cure it.... goto http://www.abxzone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34558 and follow the install guide. Never mind what mobo you have its the perfect way for a stable system. When all hunky dory, goto advanced setting/smart guard and disable fastwrites. Reboot your system, go into bios and ensure fastwrites turned off there as well. restart and away you go. Trust me its the fast writes that does it.

Suggest you try the fastwrites before reinstall but you will more than likely crash because your windows install will be damaged somewhat by the constant crashes. Before we get a hail of replies saying it won't, I bet your pc is taking more than 2 mins by now to start up and seems to think about shutting down when you tell it too.

My system now very stable and its o/c P4G8x 2.4 P4B(533) @ 167mhz(3.01Ghz), 2x512 synchronous 2,2,2,6. Bios revision 4tweaked.

Good luck,if I can run an o/c system stable with Radeon, anyone can.
