Monitor strangeness

About two weeks ago, the monitor ceased to function properly. It will power on and display semi-properly but then it goes black without losing power. Sometimes while it is operational, the built-in speakers produce some kind of garbage/static noise and the image quality degrades significantly (everything is faded, and not consistently). Messing with the VGA cable in the back by lifting it seems to allow it to stay on longer, though that is when I get the speaker noise/image quality degradation the most.

Any clue as to what this could be and if it can be repaired for less than the cost of a new monitor?

...and what happens with a different VGA cable?

Knowing what kind of monitor you have would help. For example, if it's an old CRT and you get the same result with a different cable, it could be power is dying.

It's an LCD, namely a 17" Viewsonic Optiquest. I don't know how many model numbers exist with those specs though I can dig up my monitor's model if necessary.

The VGA cable is integrated so far as I can tell, so I can't switch cables.
