monitor refresh rate

It's correct for an LCD display. For a CRT, you should run at a higher resolution to prevent flicker and eyestrain. Do NOT run a LCD any higher.
 
Most CRTs can do 1024x768 @ 85hz. If you've got a commercial brand monitor (HP, Compaq, Emachines, Dell, etc.), typically, their monitors will do 1024x768 @ 85hz, and a max of 1280x1024 @ 60hz. I've got one of those HP Pavillion monitors, so I run at 10x7 @ 85hz. It's a bit better on my eyes than 60hz. I'd like to have a new monitor, but can't afford it.
 
Hmm, for me, 60hz on a CRT absolutely tears my eyes up, and gives me a headache. 75hz is OK, but not best. 85hz is excellent, with 90hz+ being as far as I can tell, a 100% stable picture for my eyes. there is an ever so slight flicker that's more bothersome then anything at 85hz w/my eyes, but that's just me, I guess. never actually noticed it till I cranked the refresh up to 100hz...

If you have an LCD, just run at 60hz...it might extend it's life, and you won't notice a touch of difference picture-wise(maybe even a little sharper than higher refreshes)
 
I have a compaq mv540 crt monitor. I run it at 800x600 because at 1024x768 i see small grey lines going across the screen. I don't see those lines when i run the monitor at 800x600 but when i do, i only get 60 hertz refresh. My eyes do get irriatated by the monitor sometimes but i never thought it something to do with the refresh rate.
 
85Hz is optimal for 99% of people.

If you have an LCD, don't listen to any of these people and run at the optimal refresh rate and resolution, because if you don't, you will not get the crisp picture LCDs are known for.
 
I was on the impression that lcds do not flicker but just stay "on", the 60hz refers to the time it takes to change, if it HAS to change. Does this mean less eye strain on normal use, but eye strain on game?
