looking at getting a new monitor. i currently have 2 24" 1900x1200 TN's. got them ~4 years ago. i like them well enough.

would like to get a good TN panel to use as a center monitor. i figure if i decided to go IPS, the dell 2412m is the way to go, but i'd prefer to spend less $250 on the monitor (also looking at getting an SSD, more i save here the sooner i can get that).

i'm finding it hard to find recent reviews of monitors.

do a fair bit of gaming (mostly non-fps).

A 1920x1200 24" TN? I suspect you're going to be out of luck there. I haven't seen one of those in quite some time; the market has essentially standardized on 1080P for everything below professional monitors.:(

Theres a few 24'' 1920x1200 available on newegg but the cheapest are about $300. Its unlikely you'll find one for under 250

wow, i know i looked at newegg and all the 24" monitors, guess i didn't realize they would almost be all 1080p ones. =/

if i end up going to ~300$, i'd prolly just be better of getting a 2412m for a little more.

this.

check the "monitors" tab at techbargains.com daily, and the U2412M is bound to go on sale again for ~$320 + tax shipped. i swear Dell discounts this monitor once every month (or at the very least every other month).

Yeah, Dell always has $50 off on the monitor it seems. I got mine when they had one of these sales, saved me 100 bucks.

Do you want a TN just because they are cheaper? I personally don't think I could ever go back to a non-IPS display.

yep.

i'm not quit sold on how much better IPS is over TN. i use an apple cinema 24" display at work and its nice, but its not night and day difference that i can tell.

best buy currently has a 1080p 23" IPS (LG IPS236V) on sale for $200 this week i'm thinking i might test out. (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/LG+-+IPS+Series+23"+LED+Monitor/2031077.p?id=1218306466603&skuId=2031077)

biggest reason for upgrading is at times my screen will tear in some games. i have an ati 5850 so i'm pretty sure its not my vid card causing it.http://www.bestbuy.com/site/LG+-+IPS+Series+23"+LED+Monitor/2031077.p?id=1218306466603&skuId=2031077

Screen tear is caused by refresh rate, I don't think a new monitor is going to help you there. Unless you get a 120Hz monitor, but those are pretty expensive right now...

I have two 5 year old DELL E248WFP 24" TNs at work, and U2412M at home. Honestly, I like the TN panel more because the backlight is warmer than the LED one. I don't have any problems with the TN at all, and I do circuit CAD work. It does use more power, but the company pays for it anyways :) That said, I do like using U2412M in the rotated mode. They were on sale for 250 or so on one deal a day site a few weeks ago.

As long as your system can run a solid 60+ fps, turn on vsync and you wont get any screen tearing. But if you drop below 60fps, you are going to get stuttering. This assume your display runs at 60Hz, which it most likely does.
