Monitor randomly pulses brightly...

I've got a crappy 17" monitor (Hyundai Deluxscan 7870) which will randomly get REALLY bright for about 5 seconds, then stop. It makes it look like there's a supernova occuring on my screen, and it's murdering my eyes. Could it be reaching the end of it's lifespan? I only got it two years ago.
