i have a lcd monitor and i'm wondering if i'll do any harm by never turning off the monitor and leaving it in stand by (orange light) all of the time.

No, it doesn't draw any power or anything. It's just the same as having it off.

Well, it draws a minute amount of power. Something has to keep the orange light lit. 🙂

CRTs are just like a light bulb, it's more likely to burn out when is turn on/off. So keeping it on all the time will maximize life time. However, I'm not sure about LCD.

No. The natural state of LCD pixels are in the off state. When the power is applied you get the untwisting effect resulting in light passing through.

LCDs should not experience any ill effects without activity.
