Monitor problems...

I was reading the topic about screen resolutions, so I decided to see which ones I could hit. I changed mine to 1152 x 864, and the monitor seemed to do fine. So I was messing around with the settings, getting the screen right, and it started to look pretty good. All of a sudden I noticed the screen starting to get all fuzzy. Then the monitor just collapsed into the center and shut itself off and started making this soft clicking sound. WTF happened to my monitor??

I am posting this on my other computer. My monitor is a 17" KDS Avitron, and supports up to 1280x1024@60 hz. This res was running at 75 hz.

Did I kill it?

Does the monitor display anything when the computer first boots up (before Windows starts)?

Sorry to say that it sounds like a problem in the horizontal deflection circuit based on the symptoms you describe. Monitors have protection circuits that will shut the monitor off in the event of a failure. The intent is to prevent phosphor burn due to excessive beam current hitting a small part of the screen in addition to preventing fireworks or smoke.

How old is the unit? Is it still under warranty?

Good Luck

I agree with Gosharkss that it's probably the horizontal deflection circuit (horizontal output transistor shorted), but it shut down not to protect the picture tube but because the horizontal deflection circuit generates many of the voltages needed to light up the screen. However, most digitally controlled monitors won't allow excessively fast scan rates and will shut down and even display a warning on the screen.

The higher the vertical scan rate, the higher the horizontal rate and the greater the wear on the horizontal transistor. So I wouldn't run any monitor at its fastest scan rates for long, especially a non-overdesigned brand like KDS/Pixie.

Well the monitor won't show anything and the power button doesn't light up. It had been running fine for 10 min - no warning and it just collapsed inside of 10 seconds.

I guess it won't even POST, if monitors did such a thing. Its still under warranty, and KDS is shipping me a new one before I even send them back this one. All I have to do is pay shipping. Thanks for the help though. Its too bad the monitor is dead in the water.
