Monitor problems in Win95b

First off, my humble system:

Intel 450
AOpen AX6B m/b
96mb
17" Proview
Diamond V770-Ultra & eVGA MX
Reference Drivers = ALL 3.XX/5.XX/up to 6.31
Windows 95/OSR2.5 (all patched up)
DirectX 7.0a

Win95 will not allow me to set my desktop resolution higher than 1024x768. The monitor will support up to 1280x1024 @ 66Mhz refresh rate. Please note, games that support higher res run OK up to 1280!

What I've tried so far without success:
Uninstalled/reinstalled monitor using Proview *.inf file
Uninstalled/reinstalled generic 1280x1024 monitor from Win95
Cleaned out registry settings from old 14" NEC monitor
Uninstalled/reinstalled different NVidia drivers many times
Upgraded to new MX card --- same problem!

Looking in the registry and all the various *.inf files shows the higher resolutions there --- I just can't get them to display my desktop higher than 1024x768! It's not really a big deal, but I did buy the 17" to show higher.

Is there anything else you can suggest short of a complete uninstall of Win95? I'm not ready to do that right now.

Dumb question I know, but I'm assuming that Win95 can display the 2D desktop at that 1280 --- am I wrong?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
