Monitor powers down after windows load screen

This is an old pc so have no official driver installed. Device manager shows the graphics card to be rage 128 pro but while installing the actual drivers from ati website I get the message 'driver not compatible with device'! And also uninstalling the card in device manager (in safe mode) seems to take care of the monitor powering down prob but it comes back after a second restart. Kindly help 🙁
