Monitor/PC will not come out of sleep mode

My 6600GT finally bit the dust so I bought an ATI X1550 from Office Depot for a quick fix. I also picked up Vista while I was there. Well after 2 days of use I was fed up with it because whenever my monitor (Dell 2001FP) went into sleep mode, I couldn't get it out anyway other than pressing the reset button on my machine. I reinstalled XP only to find it to do the same thing...

Anyone know what could cause this?

System Specs:
A64 3800 X2
1GB RAM
X1550 ATI RADEON
K8N Neo4 Platinum Motherboard

Some ideas:

- In certain "sleep" modes you just have to press the power button to reawaken the PC.
- Also try changing the BIOS power saving option from S1 to S3 or back again.
- Updating your video drivers (ati.amd.com) may improve compatibility with your PC.

Happens to my monitor at work with a very similiar Dell monitor. Not sure why it does it. My old monitor never had this problem. Maybe you can turn off some power saving features for the monitor to get around the problem.

Here is the weird thing. My monitor does come out (light goes from orange to green), but I still get no video. I tried changing some of my BIOS settings but still no luck. What about this DPMS stuff? Should I change it the V/H+Blank instead?

I also have the 2001FP running on an ATI AIW 7000, and i have a similar problem. When the computer is on, if i turn off my monitor, and then turn it back on a while later, it doesn't ever come out of sleep mode. Sometimes i've had luck with hitting my keyboard for half an hour, or cycling through different video inputs, or cycling the monitor power, or even plugging another video source into one o of the other monitor video inputs, and then going back to my video from the computer. However, this wasn't a very good fix. I'm running XP, and i also tried updating the crappy ATI drivers, and reinstalling stuff, and playing with all the power settings in windows and in the BIOS, but nothing has worked for me. I got so fed up with it, i just never turn off my monitor when the computer is on. I've never had a problem with the monitor not waking up if it's already on. I also noticed if my monitor is off and the computer is off, and then i turn on the computer first and then the monitor a little later, the monitor doesn't wake up. So i always have to make sure i turn the monitor on first, and that Dell screen goes away, before i power up my computer.

Do you have an ABIT mobo? I have an ABIT board, but not sure if that has anything to do with it.

OK I found this out. If it is working and you turn the monitor off, when you turn it back on it does the same thing... light turns green but still no video...

One thing it might be is my PSU. Recommended is a 400W PSU and I am only using a 380w for the time being... could this little spurt of video initialization be causing this?

I had a similar problem with a LCD monitor, I cant remember the make or model but the manufacturer website said that the likelyhood of this issue is due to the PSU within the monitor itself. I gave the monitor to a freind and told him if he wanted to call them and go through all the headache of getting an RMA for it he could have it.
I know this is prolly going to give you no help but if it happened to me it could happen to you too, good luck.

I too have experienced this issue with the 8500GT and Vista with dual monitor setup, only the vga connected monitor came out of sleep. Turning the monitor on and off gave the message 'no signal', so I took that to mean one of the heads wasnt waking up.

I cant help with a fix, as the guy said something about 'voodoo-lights' screensaver stopping and then the monitor waking up again.....

hmm...that's interesting. i just opened up my case and turns out i also have an antec 380W PSU. but my parents have 3 computers at home, and i'm pretty sure none of them have a problem waking up.

i've also tried resetting bios to default, and updating bios, and all that, but didn't help.

eventhough i love my dell monitor, after this issue, i'd probably think twice about getting another one. and of course their tech support is useless and painful.

what kind of motherboard do you have?

Lately I have been noticing my monitor flickering (i see a tiny black line flash here and there) usually on a white screen in Firefox. I don't know why I can not notice it on any other screen.

Try the monitor on one of your folks machines, and one of their monitors on yer comp.
At least that will let you assign blame.

Try to disable power saving in windows and the bios.

I think white uses the most power from the monitor. I had a CRT that would overheat and turn off in the old days, because not enuf airflow.
But shouldn't just be firefox. Tried IE?

Not yet. I recently built a new comp, and now obviously have a new and improved (and more powerful) PSU as well as a different video card. Actually i haven't turned on that comp in about 3 months since i now get enough of computers at work, but i've been planning on trying it with my new computer and seeing if the monitor still does the same thing or not.

Although I did try connecting my laptop to the Dell monitor through VGA, and the monitor couldn't wake up with the laptop either.

I'll post experiment results when i get them.

I've had this problem with my system since day one. I stopped worrying about it and just set it hibernate instead of sleep. Works fine.
